COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS AT THE AIRPORT
A message from Lew Bleiweis, Executive Director
The team at AVL works hard daily to operate a safe, efficient and welcoming airport for our region. The day-to-day work is important and rewarding.

We also have days where we enjoy connecting with our community in other meaningful ways. We had one of those days this month when we hosted Wings for Autism® in partnership with Allegiant, Worldwide Flight Services, The Arc of Buncombe County, and the Transportation Security Administration.

We welcomed some of our special neighbors who are on the autism spectrum, along with their caregivers, to experience a simulated airplane trip in an effort to provide important familiarization and education about the air travel experience. It has become one of my favorite days at Asheville Regional Airport each year. The excitement expressed by our guests reminds me to continue to appreciate the magic of air travel, and it warms my heart to know that many of our guests - who have been too afraid to take a trip because of the unfamiliar environment - may now feel comfortable enough to plan an adventure.

THIRD CONSECUTIVE RECORD YEAR OF GROWTH AT AVL
800,000+ passengers served for the first time in history
The airport is reporting the highest number of annual passengers in its 56-year history, with enplanements up 5.6% (414,606) and deplanements up 4.5% (412,042), for a total of 826,648 passengers flying in and out of the airport in 2016.  This is a five percent increase over the previous record year, set in 2015, and sustains AVL as the fourth largest commercial service airport in North Carolina.

PARKING GARAGE CONSTRUCTION LEAPS FORWARD
Walls imprinted with mountain scenes
The crane in front of the terminal has been in significant operation during the past few weeks, and now the north walls of the parking garage are in place. We are receiving positive feedback about the mountain scenes that were fabricated into the concrete panels, with area residents glad to see the nod to our region's Blue Ridge Mountains.

The parking garage is slated to be complete by the fall of this year.

Aircraft pressurization 101
Flight crews will often tell you that the aircraft is pressurized for your comfort. While this is reassuring to hear, have you ever wondered what it actually means? What is cabin pressurization and why is it necessary?
