Throughout history, Roses have
possessed a symbolic and beautiful role in our lives.
Scientist estimate that the Rose is35 million years old During Roman times, roses were extensively cultivated in the Middle East and used as confetti at celebrations, for medicinal purposes, and as a source of perfume. During the 15th Century "War of the Roses" The white and Red Rose was used to identify if one was on the side of the Lancasters or the Yorks. In the 17th century, the Royals considered rose water as legal tender and was often used as barter and for payments. Having just purchased some Organic Bulgarian Rose Absolute, the going price for 1/16 oz was between $60-80.00 so it is still quite dear.
It wasn't until the late eighteenth century that cultivated roses were introduced into Europe from China. Most modern-day roses can be traced back to this ancestry.
When most of us think of roses, we think of perfume or a bouquet of beautiful flowers. Roses and Rose Hip, (the
fruit of the
rose plant) have incredible medicinal and herbal properties. The petals are often used in herbal medicine, the essential oil is used in massage or
aromatherapy, and the seed pods (hip) is an excellent source of vitamin C. Rose oil is used externally to help regenerate skin, to promote feelings of well-being, and to purify the system. The scent of rose oil is very soothing for the nervous system.
Today, we honor St. Valentine and recall the history of the Rose in celebrating our love for significant others, friends, and family. Shakespeare said, "The Rose is a Rose" but I think it is so much more
