  Message from the Superintendent

As we head towards the holidays and the mid-year point in the school year, I want to express my gratitude for the amazing support we continue to receive from our San Leandro community. Case in point: the recent voter approval of our school bond measure which sets our students up for success and allows our district to provide the tools necessary for 21st-century learning. Please read below for more information about planned bond projects, our improved state testing results and other exciting news happening around the district.

On behalf of myself and our district staff, I want to wish all our community a safe and relaxing holiday season. We have so many positive things to be proud of here at SLUSD as we continue to provide an exceptional learning environment that supports, engages and challenges our students.

Best Wishes,
Mike McLaughlin, Ed.D.
Superintendent
San Leandro Unified School District

J1 Passes - New Revenue for San Leandro Schools

The board and administration extend their sincere appreciation to the voters of San Leandro for approving the recent bond measure on the November ballot. Funds raised from the bond will support student learning through technology upgrades and facility enhancements. All work will occur in three phases over the next nine years, with Phase One beginning this summer. Technology upgrades for students and staff and select library renovations will comprise the major work in Phase One. Future work includes improving heating/ventilation systems, repairing roofs and faulty plumbing, as well as updates to district emergency systems and adding new facilities and equipment to support instruction in math, science, engineering, arts and technology.

We are looking forward to these projects taking shape and will regularly communicate our progress through district communication channels and specific bond communications.

California State Superintendent of Instruction showcases SLUSD test results

The 2015-2016 school year marks the first time San Leandro Unified School District received comparable results for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). CAASP, a statewide evaluation, includes a battery of assessments designed to measure students progress towards the mastery of the California Common Core State Standards in grades 3rd - 8th and 11th.

SLUSD’s results show marked improvement and validate our dedication to student achievement and growth. Specifically, 75 percent of our elementary and secondary schools demonstrated positive growth for English Language Arts (ELA), and half of the elementary schools demonstrated double-digit growth in ELA over last year. Similarly, in mathematics, 75 percent of elementary and secondary schools demonstrated improvement.

The notable progress at San Leandro High School prompted the State Superintendent of Instruction, Tom Torlakson, to choose SLUSD as the public kickoff site for releasing the California statewide test results. At the event in August, Torlakson praised San Leandro High School for exceeding the state average for proficiency including double-digit growth for both African-American and Latino students. We are very proud of the hard work and dedication all students, parents and district employees exhibit to make SLUSD a district on the move!

Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI)  Program launches at Washington for 2017-2018

We are pleased to announce that San Leandro Unified School District will be implementing a new  Two Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) program in the 2017- 2018 academic school year at Washington Elementary for students entering kindergarten in the Fall of 2017. This research-based educational program at Washington brings native English-speaking and native Spanish-speaking students together. Students in the TWBI program utilize their strong foundation in one language to master the second language. As a result, students reach the goals of becoming bilingual, biliterate in Spanish and English while meeting common core state standards and gaining high levels of multicultural proficiency.  This highly desired program will add options for parents who would like their child to have academic proficiency in Spanish and English while becoming confident multilingual global citizens in an environment that fosters rich, positive cross-cultural competencies.  If you are interested in learning more about how to enroll your Kindergarten child in the program for the the 2017-2018 academic year and would like to receive additional information about the program, please plan to attend a series of parent informational nights which will occur on:

January 11 and January 25, 2017  at Washington Elementary at 5:00 pm. For any other questions, please contact Dr. Zarina Zanipatin in the Teaching, Learning and Educational Equity Department at zzanipatin@slusd.us or at (510) 667-6226.
