January came and went with surprising swiftness.  Enter February and so begins the downhill slope to the end of the school year.  Remember to assist your child to dress appropriately daily.  Mornings are cool and mid-day we are starting to warm up nicely.

Last week, we experience delay and school closure due to inclement weather.  Be in the know by checking your email and our Facebook Page for the most up to date notices. Though I try, our website doesn't always update as quickly as I would like.    You can also check RE-1 School District Website, listen to local Radio Stations & Television Channels for updates on school delays and closures.

Many thanks to the families who were able to attend our January Parent Night.  We are sorry to have missed those who were unable to come.  Staff appreciate your willingness to be a part of your child's education and we strive to meet your needs when planning these evening educational forums.  Please check your email inbox for a follow up survey.  We are looking for feedback and ideas for future sessions which includes suggestions for timing and subject areas.  The survey can and should be filled out by all families including those who were unable to attend this last session.  Thanks in advance for your input.

Re-enrollment for Fall 2017-2018 is in full swing.  If you have not filled out your Intent to Re-Enroll form, please do so by Friday, February 3rd to ensure placement for fall.  Forms were emailed on the 17th of January.  Children's House New Student Registration will begin February 6th.  Registration Forms can be accessed on our  or by stopping by the office.

Health Wise-Winter Tips

Tip #1) Everyone can take elderberry syrup (also called sambucol) to help prevent colds and flu!  It tastes good, does not react with any medications, and if taken at first sign of a cold or other respiratory illness, can help prevent one from getting the illness or at least have a lot milder symptoms.  There are many recipes online to make it at home, and just remember, if you are using honey to sweeten it, do not give it to children under 1 year of age.  There may be some recipes that use glycerin instead, and those can be given to children under one.  Most local health food stores, and even some of the local pharmacies carry this now.
Tip #2) Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy to help prevent or decrease symptoms of the flu, and is now available at many grocery stores and pharmacies.  It comes in little tubes full of sugar pills, but you don't have to use the whole container, you can just sprinkle a few little pills out into mouth for each dose.  The kids version is really no different than the adult version.  For prevention of flu, take a few pillules once a month, if you start to feel sick or have been around someone with the flu, then take some every few hours (as directed on the box).  This too, does not react with any medications.
Tip #3)  Sugar decreases the immune system's ability to fight off infections.  So if you or your kids have overindulged in the candies, cookies, or cakes; consider taking some extra Vitamin C, drink plenty of water, and maybe even get some extra rest (or an extra nap for the kids), to help your immune system stay strong this holiday season.

Board News
Greetings from your Children's House Board of Directors!  We hope you enjoyed your holidays and are enjoying our wonderful winter weather. A few things to consider:
  • If you haven't already, please do fill out the online survey about our school(s) from the Student Accountability Committee. This is a great opportunity to provide some feedback to the school about many things, including academics, your connection with the school, and how we can improve.
  • If you are interested in joining a Board committee, please let us know!  A great way to know what is going on is to come to one of our board meetings (next public meeting is March 13th at 5pm at the Beech Street campus).  You can also find past agendas and meeting minutes on our website at Board Minutes
Introducing our newest Board Member - Cayce Hamerschlag:
Our Family moved to Cortez in June 2015. We moved from the San
Francisco Bay Area, where I had lived since 2001. I grew up in Charlotte, NC and received my bachelor's degree in Psychology and German from the University of Georgia. Following college I lived in Salzburg, Austria where I was an au pair and student for about 3 years and then an English teacher for another 3 years.

I have been a  speech language pathologist since 2012 and I work primarily with the 3-5 year old population. I began working with SJBOCES this school year and I provide services preschoolers in Cortez.

Our 6 year old twins, Ole and Elsa, are in kindergarten at The Children's House and we also have a 2 year old son, Cai.

We all enjoy reading, skiing, hiking, swimming, camping and traveling. Most of us enjoy games, puzzles and mountain biking.

As always, your questions, concerns and ideas are important me; please come see me.

Sincerely,
Alexia Hudson-McGrath
