- MCC is participating TOMORROW, May 3, in Give LOCAL Missoula, an annual day of giving for our local non-profits. Please consider giving a $10+ donation to help keep our train on the tracks! Also, consider supporting one of the many great organizations in Missoula. You can click on the Give Local banner above to take you to the donation page.
- We are seeking 2-D or 3-D artists to display their works in our downtown office May 31-June 28. Proposals are due this Friday, May 6, and the selected artist will be notified by May 13. We will host an opening reception on First Friday, June 3, from 5 - 8 PM for the chosen artist. We are located at 327 E. Broadway, downtown Missoula. First Folio!
The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, on National Tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library
The University of Montana, recently named Montana's host for the "First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare," national tour, is pleased to announce that the First Folio exhibition will be on display in the Montana Museum of Art and Culture and open to the public May 9 - 31.
The First Folio is the first complete collected edition of William Shakespeare's plays, published in 1623, seven years after his death. Compiled by two of Shakespeare's fellow actors, it preserves 36 of Shakespeare's plays. Without it, we would not have 18 of those plays, including "Macbeth," "Julius Caesar," "Twelfth Night," "The Tempest" and "Antony and Cleopatra."
"We are thrilled we will be able to showcase the folio on campus in May 2016," said Julie Biando Edwards, an associate professor at the Mansfield Library. "This is a wonderful opportunity for the community. We're especially pleased that parents and families visiting for graduation will be able to see it." The MMAC will be the only location in Montana to display the folio during its tour around the country.

SpectrUM Exhibition: "Shakespeare's Sky"
Journey back in time to the features of the night sky that inspired Shakespeare's works. SpectrUM will offer hands-on opportunities to compare the tools we use today to Galileo's first use of the telescope to unlock the secrets of the sky. "Shakespeare's Sky" will run May 1 - 31 at the SpectrUM Discovery Area (218 E. Front St.)

Chris Pumphrey will be hosting a
Neil Young Tribute on Wednesday, May 4, at the Top Hat. There will be an acoustic set from 8 - 9 PM, followed by a plugged-in band performance at 9 PM.

First Friday Preview: Independent Film Shot in Missoula
Saving For The Day is an independent feature film shot in beautiful Western Montana. This entertaining and unique project touches on 15 different genres, but is primarily an action-adventure with strong elements of romance and comedy. This film was the 2014 the Montana Big Sky Film Grant award recipient. The story follows Joe Bell, a Missoula resident, on his journey from bored accountant to hero.
The cast and crew of Saving For The Day will be hosting screenings of exclusive clips from this locally made action-adventure on Friday, May 6, from 5 - 8 PM. Join the cast and crew for a glass of beer or wine to talk film in the back of Liquid Planet downtown!
The cast and crew have put in over 6,500 hours of work and the movie is in the final stages of postproduction. There is currently a crowd funding to raise funds for postproduction costs. All donations will be used to finalize this local, independent film project. Contributions may be made at MissoulaMovie.com. The deadline for funding is May 21, 2016. The local cast & crew are inviting Montana to support this love letter to Missoula.

Art by Local Teens on Display at High School Art Show
Paint, clay, recycled materials, multi-media...and months of young people unleashing their creativity! Southgate Mall is pleased to host the 2016 High School Art Show, on display April 26 - May 15. Enjoy an outstanding exhibition of thousands of pieces of art including paintings, sculptures, prints, and more created by area high school students. Organized by the Missoula County Public Schools' Art Department, this year's show features artwork by students from: Alberton High School, Arlee High School, Big Sky High School, Drummond High School, Florence-Carlton High School, Hellgate High School, Loyola Sacred Heart High School, Seeley Swan High School, Sentinel High School, Valley Christian High School, and Willard Alternative High School. The University of Montana School of Art will present the 2016 Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Thesis Exhibition April 28-May 13 in the Gallery of Visual Arts and April 25-May 13 in the University Center Gallery.
Both galleries will hold Commencement receptions from 3 - 4 PM Friday, May 13, and all events are free and open to the public.
The annual BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition contains a diverse array of media and content, from paintings and drawings to sculpture, installation art, photography, video, printmaking and ceramics.
The Gallery of Visual Arts, located on the first floor UM's Social Science Building, is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The UC Gallery, located on the second floor of the UC, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Free Cycles Fridays on the UM Oval
A weekly bike ride that meets at the Grizzly Bear Statue on the UM Oval at 12:30 PM and rides to the community bike shop, Free Cycles, where participants can enjoy each other's company, work on their bike or take the Bike Well class. This happens every Friday. Returns to campus by 2 PM.

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture will host The Silver Foundation's premier art installation on Parkinson's disease May 9 - 31 in the Paxson Gallery at the University of Montana.
The installation, "Capturing Moments: Living Life with Parkinson's," brings together inspiring quotes, stories, text, wordplay and photography showcasing many journeys of resilience from the global Parkinson's community. In combining different mediums, Montana artists Carolyn Montgomery from The Silver Foundation and Hadley Ferguson from the Summit for Parkinson's created a dynamic and interactive exhibition drawing from deeply personal and inspiring stories.
The exhibit includes a tree with thousands of leaves, each leaf containing a quote or message from around the world of someone living with or touched by Parkinson's disease.
In combination with the mixed-media tree sculpture, the exhibition also features environmental portraits with individual accounts of resilience in the face of Parkinson's.
MMAC will host extended hours for both the Paxson and Meloy Galleries from May 9-31. For a full list of the extended hours, visit the website.

Lunafest is coming to Missoula!
LUNAFEST, a nationally-touring film festival that showcases short films by, for, and about women, is back again with six exceptional short films, ringing from animation to fictional drama, and covering topics such as women's health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers.
The festival arrives at the Wilma Theater on Thursday, May 12. Doors open at 6 PM, followed by a silent auction. The show begins at 7 PM. Tickets are $10 when purchased online in advance and $15 at the door. You can purchase tickets at ywcaofmissoula.org.
Fifteen percent of the proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund, LUNAFEST's national partner. Eighty-five percent will go to YWCA Missoula's GUTS! (Girls Using Their Strengths) program, including funding scholarships for their Summer Wilderness Adventures for girls ages 9-18. On these trips, girls learn self-confidence, leadership skills, and cooperation in a safe and healthy environment. Girls who benefit from the scholarships typically have little access to outdoor activities, educational programs, and often cannot afford the $400 fee.

5th Annual Doggie Dash Fun Run
Missoula Parks & Recreation and
Missoula Animal Control invite you and your four-legged buddy to the
5th annual Doggie Dash pet expo and fun run on Sunday, May 15, at Silver Park (
900 Cregg Lane). The pet expo is from 11 AM to 2 PM, the 1-mile and 5k races start at 11 AM.
The Doggie Dash Expo features an agility course, groomers, trainers, dog walkers, boarders, pet retailers, veterinarians and much more. Browse a variety of pet services and gear, and meet featured pets up for adoption from local shelters. The expo is free, but donations to Missoula Animal Control are greatly appreciated.
Runners and walkers may enter one or both races; all paid racers receive a Doggie Dash t-shirt. Kids 10 and under may race for free, but must pre-register. Register for the 1-mile and/or 5k race by May 1 for the lowest entry fees-$20 per person. Race registration from May 2 to May 15 is $25.
All dogs must be leashed. Proceeds benefit homeless pets at Missoula Animal Control. To register, visit

The JRPC Coordinating Council and Missoula Peace Quilters awards the 2016 Peacemaker award to Patrick Weasel Head. He is the 30th Peacemaker we have made this award to in this our 30th anniversary year.
The peacemaker award is given each year to individuals or groups who demonstrate a long-term commitment to peace and justice and take a leadership role in creating a better world. We look for people who "walk the walk" in their personal and professional lives.
Join us as we welcome him to the list of honored Missoula Peacemakers and celebrate his lifetime of commitment to a better and more peaceful, connected world at an awards celebration on Sunday, May 22 from 4 - 6 pm at the Payne Family Native American Center on the UM Campus. The Missoula Peace Quilters have just completed a very special quilt for Patrick, as they do for each of the award recipients. The quilt will be unveiled and presented at the celebration on May 22, and coffee and cake will be served at a reception afterward. The event is free and open to the public.

Using wood, tools, our imagination and hands, we will carve our way into discoveries about who we are, where we are, and what is changing in us and our world. Basic skills such as how to hold and sharpen tools, make marks, amplify the power of black and white, print by hand and press will be covered into this introductory class. You will produce color reduction woodcuts from a single block. Using a process that starts with drawing, carving, layering on color, and then printing, you will repeat the cycle, each time carving more away from the block and layering on consecutive colors until the image is complete. This can be a very spontaneous and effective way to build an image.

Open Art Call: Radius Gallery Juried Art Exhibition
Radius Gallery invites artists to submit original artwork to its 2nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition, to be held Jul 30 - Sep 16 in Missoula, Montana. This year's theme is The Changing Moment.

The exhibit is designed to showcase outstanding 2D and 3D visual fine art by a wide variety of artists. We welcome unexpected interpretations of the show's theme, and hope for submissions that collectively will showcase a range of subjects, styles and media.

Public Art Call: Traffic Signal Boxes
The
City of Missoula Public Art Committee invites artists residing in Missoula County to apply for a public art project to create art on traffic signal boxes (TSB) located throughout Missoula. The goal of the project is to use local traffic signal boxes as "canvases," greatly enhancing Missoula's visual surroundings.
Proposals are due June 3. Previously painted TSB's can be viewed at
the city's website. Past TSB models are on view at Berkshire Hathaway MT Properties through the month of April.

Zootown Fringe Festival is thrilled to report this year's dates: August 16 - 21.
Registration begins March 1 ending on June 30.
Zootown Fringe Festival is a unique opportunity to see exciting and entertaining contemporary works in an atmosphere that encourages artists and audiences to take risks. Unlike curated festivals, the open-access nature of Zootown Fringe Festival creates an opportunity for anyone with a show, exhibition or cultural event to be a part of Missoula's fastest growing performing arts festival.
Last year Zootown Fringe Festival presented over 40 performances over 6 days. In line with our mission, 100% of box office sales are paid to the artists.

Boogie-Woogie Pianist "Mr. B" Coming to Ovando!
Blues and boogie-woogie pianist Mark "Mr. B" Braun is coming to the Blackfoot!
During the first week in May, he will teach and perform in towns and
schools in the Blackfoot Valley. He reaches
Ovando
on Thursday, May 5, where
he will make music with the 9 students during the day.
At 7 PM he will give a FREE COMMUNITY CONCERT at Ovando School, in beautiful downtown Ovando. Refreshments will be served. The concert is sponsored by the Ovando School Cultural Enrichment Committee and friends of the community.

Benefit Concert: George Winston
On Wednesday, May 18, at 7 PM at Bozeman's Emerson Cultural Center's Crawford Theater, renowned pianist George Winston will perform a benefit concert in support of Hopa Mountain, a Bozeman-based nonprofit organization. This benefit concert will feature George's Summer Show, including spring and summer songs, melodic folk piano songs from his recordings, Vince Guaraldi's "Peanuts" pieces, and songs inspired by the New Orleans R&B piano tradition and the Harlem stride piano tradition.
Tickets are $20 per person. They can be purchased in advance at Cactus Records (online and in the store) and at the door. George Winston will also be holding a food drive for the Gallatin County Food Bank before the concert. Non-perishable food will be collected at the door.

Crown of the Continent Guitar Foundation (COCGF) scholarship applications are due on Tuesday, May 31 to attend the seventh annual
Crown Guitar Workshop held on August 28 - Sept. 4.
Students, teachers and performers of all ages who reside in Flathead, Lake, Sanders, Missoula, and Ravalli counties are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Construction on new Missoula Art Park downtown set for July
If all goes according to plan, construction is set to begin this summer on a $683,000 art park in downtown Missoula that will feature large sculptures, contemporary lighting, bench seating, a restroom and new trees.
The Missoula Art Park will be 8,000 square feet of public space that will give tourists a unique spot to relax and provide artists with a venue for large-scale outdoor works and education.
