The HITS Coachella Desert Circuit is in full swing, bringing top riders to Thermal, California. Many of our Zone 10 riders, juniors, amateurs, and professionals, have been enjoying the opening weeks of the circuit. In March, we look forward to the exciting conclusion which will feature a $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix. Good luck to all our competitors!

has spent many years giving back to the sport as a longtime member and previous Chair of the Zone 10 Hunter Committee, earning a USHJA President's Distinguished Service Award for her efforts. In addition, Kathy is also an active writer, anchoring PhelpsSports.com's California coverage and running iJump Sports.
Ned Glynn
is also a longtime member and previous Co-Chair of the Zone 10 Jumper Committee. He and his wife, Hope, head up Sonoma Valley Stables in Petaluma and Ned brings his many years of riding and training experience to the committee.
Denise Finch
is the head trainer and owner of Hunter's Edge in Las Vegas. She is a USHJA Certified Trainer and is constantly furthering her education by attending and hosting clinics with top professionals as well as working closely with mentors Mark Bone and Buck Brannaman.
Kay Altheuser
is a key part of the management at Elvenstar Show Stables, serving as a trainer and manager for the past 17 years. She is also a USEF 'R' licensed hunter/equitation judge and the Vice President of the LAHJA Board of Directors.

Two Emerging Athletes Program Regional Training Sessions are coming to Zone 10!
Are you proficient at 1.10m jumper-style courses? Are you under 21? This could be the opportunity you've been looking for.
The
July 12-16 session will be at Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, California, featuring clinician Joe Fargis and stable manager Anne Thornbury, and the
July 19-23 session will be at Sonoma Horse Park in Petaluma, California, with clinician Geoff Teall and stable manager Nanci Snyder! To participate in these sessions or any of the late summer training sessions, apply
by May 5. The deadline for early summer training sessions is
April 17.

Congratulations 2016 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Larry Langer

When you review the list of Larry Langer's accomplishments in the equestrian industry, it is not difficult to see why he was chosen to receive the 2016 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award.
Highlights of his career include managing the 1992 World Cup Jumping Finals in Del Mar, Calif., serving as the show jumping competition manager for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga., and producing the first multi-ring hunter/jumper shows in California.
He has served on countless committees and bo
ards, earning the 2008 California Professional Horsemen's Association Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2009 USHJA Lifetime Achievement Award, the Los Angeles Hunter Jumper Association President's Award, the USHJA Distinguished Service Award five times, and now the 2016 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award.
"It was truly a very special honor. Obviously, it's not an award that is given out frivolously," Larry commented. "With a membership of 80,000 members, the USEF certainly could have picked a lot of people other than me! But I am truly, truly honored the selection committee chose me for the award this year."

Zones 9 & 10 Will Face Off in California at the USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships

The USHJA Zones 9 & 10 Zone Jumper Championships will be November 10-12 at National Sunshine Series II in Thermal, California.
If you're competing at the Children's and Adult Amateur Jumper (1.10/1.15m), 1.20/1.25m Junior and Amateur Jumper, or 1.30/1.35m Junior and Amateur Jumper sections, you won't want to miss this exciting team Championships held in a Nations Cup-style format for all three fence heights for the first time this year.
Mark your calendars, review the
specifications, and make sure to get your rider
applications in by
May 1!
Earn a minimum of 20 points ($20 money-won) by June 1 to be eligible to qualify for the championships.
Each rider's Championship costs will be offset by a minimum of $75 paid by the rider's USHJA Zone.

Apply for Children's and Adult Amateur Hunter West Regional Championships

The USHJA Children's and Adult Amateur Hunter Regional Championships, presented by SmartPak, for the West Region (Zones 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12) will be July 18-23 at Oregon High Desert Classic I in Bend, Oregon.
Last year, this set of Championships introduced Hunter riders to a new, exciting kind of team championship.
To attend the Championships this year:
- Apply online at www.ushja.org/chaahunter by May 1
- Continue competing to earn points toward qualifying until 60 days prior to your competition
- Check out the specifications and ensure you meet all other criteria (Please note: Riders may not compete in a class that exceeds 3'3" during the qualifying period (Exception: riders may compete in the USHJA National Hunter Derby and the Children's or Adult Amateur Jumper sections during the qualifying period)
Each rider's Championship costs will be offset by a minimum of $100 paid by the rider's USHJA Zone.
In 2018, these championships will be moving toward a zone-based structure similar to that of the Zone Jumper Team Championships. Stay tuned for more information about those changes for 2018.

What's Your Horsemanship IQ?

Registration for the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge, presented by
The Plaid Horse, is officially open!
HQC is an online competition that encourages education and recognizes young equestrians who have exceptional equine knowledge. It's a wonderful opportunity for young riders to get involved and learn more about horsemanship.
The top 24 qualified participants will have the opportunity to attend HQC Nationals in the fall where they could win educational grants up to $2,000, scholarships from Lake Erie College up to $3,000, and a Charles Owen Helmet. Learn more about nationals here.
"HQC Nationals was as much a learning experience as a competition," Toni Anderson, a Zone 10 member who attended HQC Nationals, shared, "And it was wonderful to make friends with so many other young motivated equestrians and spend time with talented instructors who want to teach and share their knowledge with you."
The program is free and runs until September 1. Participants must be USHJA members and under 21 years of age.

Sophia Mossman (Cam and Becky Smith, trainers) and her Carré were a force to be reckoned with last year, placing in the top ten of several grands prix and earning the USHJA Zone 10 Horse of the Year Reserve Championship in the 1.40M/1.45M Junior Jumper section.
"Carré has been absolutely phenomenal," Sophia shared. "I rode him the Markel Insurance Grand Prix Finals and at the Interactive Mortgage U25 Developing Riders Finals in Las Vegas. I'm now balancing riding competitively and being a student at USC, so I hope we can continue our success this year!"
