CHICAGO MUSEUMS SET ATTENDANCE RECORDS IN 2016
Adler Planetarium ( Michelle Larson) set an attendance record for the second straight year in 2016, and the Art Institute of Chicago ( Susanne Ghez and Zoe Ryan) reported double-digit growth in attendance. The Adler had 578,000 visitors, giving the museum a record since it began charging admission in 1993. Adler President Michelle Larson attributed the continuing growth mostly to philosophical and programming changes at the planetarium.

"We are as pleased to talk about the things we don't know about the universe as those we do know," said Michelle Larson, who came to the Adler in 2013 with a reputation as an adept science educator. "Our Trip Advisor score has gone up by half a point in recent years. That's not an easy thing to do."

The Art Institute of Chicago has been among Trip Advisor's top museums in the world in recent years. Its 15 percent 2016 attendance growth, to 1.79 million visitors, is owed largely to the "Van Gogh's Bedrooms" exhibition in the first half of the year, the museum's best attended show since "Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South" in 2001-02.

The Chicago Children's Museum (Jennifer Farrington) also reported gains in attendance. Read more...
