Larry Keith Shoup 1940 - 2016 

Larry Keith Shoup
, 76, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2016, at Angela Hospice, with his family and closest friends at his side.   Larry was born May 29, 1940, in Wadsworth, Ohio to Ira and Grace Shoup.    Larry and Verla were high school sweet hearts and married in 1961.   They had two daughters; Molly, born in 1962, and Loni, born in 1963.

Larry graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University and a Master of Science in Hospital Pharmacy Administration from Ohio State University.    From 1965 through 1972, Larry served as Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services and Assistant Professor at OSU.    He moved to Michigan to assume the position of Director of Pharmacy at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, from 1972 until his retirement in 2000.

Larry never slowed down.    In retirement, he volunteered his services in various community activities to address local concerns.    Larry also coordinated the Public Health Disaster Preparedness Plan for the Michigan Pharmacy Association.    In 2006, he assisted the City of Detroit Homeland Security Department with coordinating hospital emergency preparedness plans.    In 2012, Larry joined the Michigan Science Center where he served on the Board as Secretary.

In addition to his work and service, Larry was an avid automotive enthusiast and he owned and restored multiple classic Corvettes.    When living in Ohio, Larry obtained his private pilot license.    Although he could not continue this hobby after moving to Michigan, he loved to visit airshows and air-museums and cherished his opportunity to get his hands on the yoke when he would fly with is son in-law George Stephens. 

Larry also cherished family time.    He was very involved in his grandchildren's lives, attending school functions, sports, and just hanging out.    Larry was kind, honest, helpful, and loving.    He was a great conversationalist with a lot of knowledge to share.    He never stopped learning.

Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Verla (Leatherman, WHS 1960);  daughter, Loni (Larry) Stevenson;  grandchildren Jamie (Brandon) Klos, Paige Stephens, Angela Stevenson, Matt Stevenson, Melanie Stevenson, Samantha Kaufman and Aaron Kaufman;  siblings, Ruth (the late Larry) Yarman, Lois Benham, Ken (Jan) Shoup, Pam (Jeff) Huebner  and sister-in-law, Mary Shoup. Sadly, Larry was preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law, Molly and George Stephens, and brother, Don Shoup.

The Shoup family received guests on Friday, December 16, from 3-8pm at the funeral home.

Larry's Funeral Service tpok place Saturday, December 17th, at 2pm (in state 1 pm) at the First United Methodist Church of Farmington, 33112 Grand River, Farmington.  Interment was Monday, December 19th, at 1pm, Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes are suggested to Henry Ford Hospital Josephine Ford Cancer Institute, One Ford Place, Detroit, MI, 48202, Attn: Brenda Wehrli;   Angela Hospice;   or charity of donor's choice.
