San Francisco 49ers last November, led the Patriots to an improbable Super Bowl comeback win against the Atlanta Falcons. Down 28-3 in the third quarter, Brady led a third quarter touchdown drive to bring the Patriots closer at 28-9 (PAT failed), then added 19 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 28-28 and force overtime. A two-yard touchdown run on the Patriots' ensuing overtime drive by running back James White sealed the 34-28 victory. In Super Bowl LI, Edelman made an incredible, falling catch over the middle while being covered by three defenders, and had five total receptions for 87 yards. Amendola had eight catches for 78 yards and scored on a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tom Brady in the fourth quarter. Edelman (5'10") and Amendola (5'11") are both under six feet tall, but considered one of the most dynamic pass-catching duos in the NFL.

Golden State Warriors
Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant and guard Stephen Curry are starters in the 66th NBA All-Star Game to be held on Sunday, Feb. 19. The game will be played in the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans at 5 p.m. on TNT. Joining Durant and Curry will be teammates Draymond Green and Klay Thompson, who have been named as reserves on the Western Conference All-Star team. Durant will make his eighth-consecutive All-Star appearance and his first as a member of the Warriors, while Curry will make his fourth All-Star appearance. Green is making his second appearance while Thompson will be going for the third consecutive year. Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr and his staff also will be in charge of the Western Conference team for the second time in three seasons.

Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) presented a new display embodying the spirit of Oakland Strong. Three pairs of sneakers worn by Golden State Warriors All Star point guard Stephen Curry -- on loan from an anonymous collector -- are on view in OMCA's Great Hall. Two of the three custom, one-of-a-kind shoes, pay respect to the victims of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in December of 2016, raising a total of $45,201 for the Oakland Fire Relief fund established through YouCaring.com by the Oakland Athletics. The shoes were purchased through an auction on eBay.

San Francisco Giants Update --
The San Francisco Giants have had a busy offseason since their NLDS loss to the Chicago Cubs. Particularly in the bullpen, which proved to be the team's demise in last year's playoff run. The Giants made a key addition in December with the signing of Mark Melancon (RHP), and reports say the team is still pursuing a left-handed reliever as well. These additions will try to replace the roles of Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo, and Santiago Casilla, all of whom entered free agency at the end of last season. While Casilla signed with the Oakland Athletics and Romo with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lopez is still on the market but a return to San Francisco is unlikely. However, there will still be some familiar faces in the Giants' pen, including George Kontos, Hunter Strickland, and Derek Law. Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training on February 13
, where fans can get a first glance at the Giants' new look bullpen. --- Addison Weil

Oakland Athletics Update: I
n November, the Oakland Athletics introduced Dave Kaval as their new President. Since that day, he has shown A's fans his commitment to one particular goal: a new stadium. Kaval hopes a new stadium will not only bring in increased revenue for the team, but also provide a more comfortable experience for the fans. The A's have played in the Oakland Coliseum since moving to California in 1968, sharing the venue with the Oakland Raiders during this span. Over the past few seasons, the stadium has begun to show its age, most notably from the lingering sewage issues. With the Raiders looking to move out of Oakland, and the Golden State Warriors moving out of neighboring Oracle Arena after the 2018 season, it makes sense for the Athletics to search for a new home. At the A's FanFest last week, Kaval assured the crowd that plans for a new stadium would be announced during the 2017 season. -- Addison Weil

I have no statistics to prove it, but I'm sure the American workplace
will be adversely affected on Monday, the day after XXIV. The
game will be
the focus of conversation, and distractions happy and sad will be
the order of the day, not to mention millions of hangovers.
I wouldn't buy a toaster or a parachute manufactured the day
after Super Bowl XXIV. You cannot engender such torrid anticipation
for an event so great that it requires Roman numerals as a suffix,
then expect there to be no social repercussions at its end.

I Coulda Had A
Three-Pointer

My older brother, Jerry, was the family athlete. All-state in football, captain of the riflery team (yes, our school had a riflery team), and a power-hitting left-handed first baseman in baseball season. So naturally I suffered from Little Brother Syndrome and tried desperately either to replicate Jerry's achievements or to excel in some other realm.
I opted for the latter. Tried amateur boxing for a while. The good news: I was strong and what was sometimes called "plucky." I could hit hard and I could take a punch. Was never knocked out or even knocked down. The bad news: I had slow hands, and with no amount of striving could I achieve those super-quick reflexes that any successful boxer needs. Plus, when it came to footwork ... let's put it this way. Get out your Illustrated Guide to Sports Terminology and look up "stumblebum" and you'll find my portrait.
Next I tried out for the basketball team. The coach believed in giving kids a chance to play, and we wound up with 15 boys on the squad. I was a third-string guard. Halfway through the season a couple of players were fired for the proverbial "violations of team standards." I think they skipped practice once too often. A couple of days later their two best friends quit in protest.
That left 11 players: five on the first string, five on the second string -- and me. As the last game of the season approached, my stats read: field goals: 0, foul shots: 0, total points: 0, minutes played: 0.
Came the season finale and we were locked in a tight contest with another local high school. With just seconds remaining we were down by one point, something like 33-32. Basketball was a slower and lower-scoring game in those days.
One of our guards started up the court with the ball and tripped over a defender's foot, twisted his ankle and went down. Time called. Our guy had to leave the game.
For some reason, Coach didn't put in a second-stringer. He sent me in.
Me!
The other guard passed the ball to me. I looked down the court. Our two forwards were jumping up and down on either side of the key. Our center was closer to me, ready to take a short pass. But time was running out and there was only time for one desperation play.
I was at midcourt. I reached back and threw an overhand pass like a soldier hurling a hand grenade. I was aiming at the taller of our two forwards. My aim was lousy. My pass was a couple of feet offline and 3 feet high.
Swish! Nothing but net! The buzzer sounded. The score was 34-33. We had won. A gasp went up from a gymnasium full of fans, followed by a cheer.
I'll let you in on a secret. Everybody in that gym thought I had made an amazing shot from midcourt. It would have been a three-pointer if three-pointers had been invented back then, but two points were enough to win the game.
To this day, not a soul on the hardwood, not my teammates, not our opponents, not the officials or coaches or fans in the audience knew that I only made that shot because my aim was lousy. But now you know it.
If three-pointers had been invented back then, my crazy winning shot would have been one. Yes, in another era, I coulda had a three-pointer.
