CABERNET
2009 Howell At The Moon Cabernet Sauvignon, California
$89 per, now $72.50 per

Layers of black fruit, smoke, licorice, incense and melted road tar come together in the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. This is an especially plush, dense Cabernet for Howell Mountain, but the sense of structure is always present. All the elements are beautifully integrated. Rich and inviting, the 2009 impresses for the way it captures fabulous textural depth while avoiding excess heaviness. The precise finish is totally striking. This is a great effort from Howell at the Moon. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029.-AG   93 points Robert Parker, 4 bottles remaining

2009 Howell At The Moon Cabernet Sauvignon The Knoll Vineyard, California
$125 per, now $89.00 per
2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Knoll Vineyard is deeper, richer and sweeter than the straight bottling, but not materially more complex, just different in style. Layers of super-ripe, intensely perfumed dark fruit flow through to the intense finish supported by firm yet well-integrated mountain tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029.   93 points Robert Parker,  7 bottles remaining
2009 Match Vineyards Butterdragon Cabernet
$44.50 per
Some months back we tasted and sold the 2007 vintage of the Match, Butterdragon Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We liked it and more importantly we have received a great deal of positive feed- back for having recommended that wine. A few days ago we received a sample of the 2009 Match Butterdragon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We had opportunity to open it last night. Had there been a second bottle on hand I would have opened it too. This 2009 vintage pours deep purple in color with just a hint of brick or cherry color on the edge of the hue. The nose is brambly berry mixed with violets and spice. The flavor profile is one of rich dark plum flavors finishing with slightly smoky blueberry . Finally, the tannin layer is rich and supple making this Cab the definition of velvety and luxurious from the moment it is poured. The 2009 Match Butterdragonn Napa Cab is normally $65-$69. There is a push on this wine. We can offer it at $44.50 per bottle matching the lowest price in the country. We can offer an additional 10% discount on orders of 6 bottles or more ($40.05 on sixes or more),
This Cab is in it drinking cycle and should show well for a minimum of 7 years. ( 91- 93 points Cellar

About the terroir: Butterdragon Hill comprises eight acres farmed by Jim Barbour and the experts at Barbour Vineyards. Give these guys and gals a piece of Napa Valley hillside and they'll plant it with an extremely narrow 3×5 spacing and then stingily give it water by the teaspoonful until the grapes seem to cry out for relief. The grapes may not be "happy" but those droopy faces provide sophisticated flavors from lush, succulent wines.

Butterdragon Hill is located on the western side of the Napa Valley above Highway 29, just a couple of miles north of St. Helena. This vineyard was planted in 2000 with green bench grafts of Cabernet Sauvignon clones 337, 7, and 15 plus a small amount of Merlot. Its first vintage, the 2002 was released in Spring 2005.

2010 Howell At The Moon Cabernet Sauvignon The Knoll Vineyard, California
$125 per, now $89.00 per

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Knoll Vineyard is slightly more restrained aromatically, but it explodes on the palate, creating a broad swath of ripe cassis, black cherry, crushed rock and forest floor notes. Full-bodied, opulent and sexy, this beauty is ideal for drinking over the next decade. Drink: 2013 - 2023    93 points Robert Parker, 6 bottles remaining

2010 Howell At The Moon Cabernet Sauvignon, California

The stunning 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell at the Moon boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as beautiful, sweet black raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with a hint of graphite, full body and a long finish. 2012 Adobe Road Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, Beckstoffer George III Vineyard
$120 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
From winery: We are honored to be able to produce wine from the historic Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard, which has been growing world-renowned Cabernet Sauvignon for 75 years. This site combines well-draining soils from the former creek bed with ideal sun exposure to yield wines with richness, fruit intensity and structure. The 2012 edition of this wine has a deep ruby color with a garnet rim, and fills the glass with enchanting aromas of cherry, red currant, raspberry, dried herbs, and vanilla bean. The fruit forward palate is lighter compared with previous vintages. Red cherries, strawberries, and raspberries mingle with plums, blueberries, and blackberries entice the palate and are accompanied by toasty oak and just enough acidity to make your mouth water. The classic addition of Rutherford dust famously shines through on the elegant and lengthy finish. Although delicious and ready to drink now, this wine has the stuffing to last up to fifteen years in your cellar. 4 bottles remaining
2013 Burgess Cabernet, Napa
$33 PER
We tasted the Burgess Napa Cabernet with Reggie Evans a couple of weeks ago and we thought it stylistically beautiful and quite serious.  This wine is all about the depth of Napa fruit, blueberry and blackberry are prominent, that combined with a winemaking style that preserves complexity and character.  Pine needles, rustic dust are just a few of the complex notes revealed within the very long finish.
We have not written about this wine until today because we were waiting for the deal to come into play.
And this one is ready for the table tonight, it has unwound.  Normal $45-54.  6 cases only $33 per, the lowest price on the net.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Burgess hits the palate with an exotic concoction of dark fruit, pencil shavings, spices, tobacco, cedar, savory herbs, licorice and lavender. Dark and imposing, the 2012 possesses superb richness, with plenty of Howell Mountain character and intensity. The silkiness of the vintage has softened some of the contours, but this remains a distinctly savory and mineral-inflected Cabernet with tons of hillside character. Today, the 2012 comes across as tightly wound and in need of further cellaring, so readers should not be in any rush to open bottles. This distinctly old-school leaning Cabernet will also thrill readers seeking value, as it delivers superb quality and personality for the money. The Burgess family has made distinctive Cabernets from their estate vineyard at the base of Howell Mountain since the early 1970s. I have not tasted these wines in a few years, but found quite a bit to like in the 2012.   93 points Vinous
*Cellar Selection* From a high perch on Howell Mountain, this producer has blended 92% Cabernet Sauvignon with 8% Petit Verdot-making for a darkly colored, robust wine. Thick, chalky tannins envelop plum, cassis and dark chocolate. Drink now through 2020. (VB)

2013 Hall Cabernet, Napa
$45 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot and 3% Syrah, shows a dense ruby/purple color, super concentration, chocolate, a touch of oak and a medium to full-bodied impressively concentrated style. It's approachable now, but perhaps will be better in 4-5 years and last 20. - Robert Parker  92+ points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2015
Winery Note:
Hall's Napa Cabernet made history as the Wine Spectator's TOP VALUE at only $55, outscoring iconic wines from Opus One, Scarecrow AND Screaming Eagle!

"Dense and concentrated, offering a sumptuous bouquet of black currant, anise, and cocoa powder. The palate is wonderfully expansive, giving up layers of black fruit, cedar spice, pipe tobacco, and a persistent finish. Already drinking beautifully, this will hit its peak in a few years and cellar beautifully for another two decades." (March, 2016) - California Wine Advisors, "Classic" 95 Points

Winemaker's Notes:
Dark garnet in color, the 2013 HALL Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon displays strong aromas of pure dark fruit with a floral lift of fresh rose. The palate is bright, concentrated and dense with plenty of structured tannins buttressed by French oak. The result is a well integrated, nuanced and complex wine.

2013 Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)
$39.50 per
91 Points!
"A beautiful elegance can be found in the 2013 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot aged 20 months in one-third new French oak. This is a good value for a Napa Cabernet. The color is a healthy dark ruby purple, the wine offers up beautiful blueberry and black raspberry fruit and is suggestive of a high-class Pomerol. The oak is pushed way to the background and the wine is medium to full-bodied with supple tannins and a long finish. Drinkable now, it should continue to evolve gracefully and hopefully even improve over the next 10 to 15 years. " The Wine Advocate

90 Points!   The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is dark, fleshy and expressive. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, mint and cloves are all laced together. Effortless and gracious, the 2013 will drink well pretty much upon release. This is an especially delicate, lifted wine for the year. All the elements are nicely balanced throughout.  Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media, October 2015

90 Points!  A Napa cab with ripe dark fruits on the nose as well as milk chocolate and some sage character. Balanced with fine tannins and ripe fruit character plus a medium finish. Drink now.  James Suckling, January 15, 2016   9 bottles remaining

2013 Phelp Insignia, only 3 bottles left
First produced from the 1974 vintage, 2013 Insignia marks the 40th vintage of our flagship Napa Valley wine. Deeply pigmented, the 2013 Insignia opens with heady blackberry and plum aromatics laced with baking spices, cardamom and espresso. Focused and fresh, this exceptionally concentrated wine showcases elegant tannin structure and a silky mouthfeel layered with dark fruit, sweet vanilla bean, cracked black pepper and bittersweet chocolate.

Another end of the year blue chip deal.  $179 per, best price on internet.  Average price $212
Blend: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc

"The 2013 Insignia (their 40th vintage) is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This wine is aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels, and the production can vary from just over 10,000 cases to nearly 20,000 cases in a very abundant vintage. There were 12,300 cases produced in 2013, and this vintage of Insignia is certainly going to turn out to be one of the great ones. The wine offers a stunning inky blue/purple color, a gorgeous nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, pen ink, graphite, new saddle leather and barrique. The wine has fabulous concentration, a full-bodied, multi-layered mouthfeel, and tremendous finish with moderate tannin. It's interesting to note that the Phelps winemaking staff had been gradually reducing the amount of Merlot in this wine over recent vintages. The 2013 should hit its peak in 5-7 years and last for 35-50. Rating: 98+ points" The Wine Advocate

"The mighty Insignia shows a vibrancy of purpose and craft in this, its 40th vintage, combining 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc. Together they find a higher calling of perfumed violet, dark plum and berry along with graphite and an edginess of dried herb. Firm, structured tannins show tremendous potential for aging and decanting. This is a near-perfect effort from a blockbuster vintage. Editors' Choice." Wine Enthusiast - 98 points

"Insignia has been built as a regional blend since its first vintage in 1974, becoming an estate-grown wine in 2004. It's based on cabernet sauvignon grown in six vineyards, from Suscol in the south to sites in Oak Knoll, Stags Leap and Rutherford, up to Phelps's Spring Valley Home Ranch in St. Helena. Ashley Hepworth has fine-tuned the style, so Insignia is still a rich wine, but now, especially in 2013, shows the kind of firmness of structure that makes the richness profound. This vintage is fresh and lively, even while it is dense and powerful, as if the power is coming out of the black raspberry fruit as well as the bright, sparkling-fresh mineral tones of the tannins. Delicious now if you give it several hours in a decanter, this is destined to evolve into a classic."Wine & Spirits 95 points

"Extravagant aromas of crushed blackberries, mint, eucalyptus and flint. Full body, round and velvety textured. Rich and flavorful finish. Lusciousness with form. Reserved palate. Very attractive now but better in 2020."  James Suckling - 95 points
"Black fruits and violet on the nose, complemented by spicecake and nutty oak. Boasts outstanding purity and density of fruit but the wine's superb sweetness is nicely controlled by its sheer juicy concentration and spice character. Conveys great inner-mouth tension owing to its firm acidity and strong underlying minerality. A terrific early showing considering the recent bottling, with a high-pitched floral element that contributes to the wine's weightless impression. The tannins are beautifully integrated with the fruit but it's hard to imagine that this wine won't shut down at some point. The long, rising finish spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate. Winemaker Ashley Hepworth noted that it was warmer on the home ranch in 2013 than in 2012 but not everywhere elsewhere in Napa Valley." Vinous / Antonio Galloni - 95 points

"Rich and full-bodied, but exhibiting the lift of a brighter red. The dark berry flavors give this an elegant mouthfeel and ease the tannic strength. Tempting now but worth cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2018 through 2032." Wine Spectator - 93 points

2013 Justin Isosceles.
Last night we tasted it side by side with the 93 point Inglenook Cask Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 . Those tasting with Michele and I were Len Musgrove who writes The Wine Bargain Sleuth, and avid collector Michael Byington. We were enameled by both wines. The Isosceles is lush and velvety with plum and blackberry at the front which drips into ripe cherry at the finish, the endless finish.  The nose is filled with violets, crushed berries and spice.  We anticipate critical reviews will have scores ranging from 94 to 97 points.   $78 per bottle   12

The greatest Opus ever. Terrific aromas of crushed black currants, blueberries and flowers with hints of sweet tobacco. Roses continue to exude opulence and class. Full body, superb balance of ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity. Complex aftertaste of black fruits and citrus fruit. Extremely persistent. So approachable now and enjoyable. But will be even better in 2019 and beyond... This will always be beautiful to drink.
100 Points James Suckling

Dark cherries, plums, smoke, licorice, new leather and menthol race across the palate in the 2013 Opus One. Firm yet also voluptuous, the 2013 has it all. The combination of fruit and structure is superb. Today, the 2013 reminds me of the 2010 when it was young, especially in its energy and pure power. The flavor remain quite primary, one of the signatures of this great Napa Valley vintage.
94-96+ Points Antonio Galloni

Red and black fruits, graphite, incense and incipient cedar meld together in a youthfully reserved bouquet that should blossom in bottle. On the palate the 2013 is more seriously structured than its polished 2012 sibling, framed by savory structural tannins. This is built for the cellar and is the latest in a string of recent successes. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot
94 Points Decanter
Seductive from the get-go, with a supple entry to the layers of complexity, mixing flavors of mocha, currant, plum, licorice, spice and cedary oak. Well-proportioned, showing a grip of fine-grained tannins that will benefit from cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now through 2028.

This is just a quick FYI to those of you who like sparkling Rose. Michele and I tasted the N.V Marragut Rose Brut Cava. It costs $16.50.  It is made in the classic Champagne  Method. NV Baron Fuente Dolores Rose Brut~Champagne
$35 per
Last week we received a bottle ofBaron Fuente Champagne Rose to consider. We decide to open it Sunday.  We made shrimp salad with mixed greens, dressed with green goddess and Filet Mignons.

The Baron Fuente has a front palate of fresh strawberry then becomes richer displaying sun ripened cherry. The bubbles are tight and the effervescence is exceptional.
I left a serving in the bottle overnight to see how it would hold up and the bubbles were still going strong the next day, the fruit did not diminish. When paired with the shrimp salad the strawberry components offered by the Fuente perfectly complimented the rich parsley and shellfish flavors on the plate. When tasted with the filet mignon, the sun ripe cherry flavors took center stage. This Rose is exceptional with a steak! Here is the best part; those of you who enjoy French Champagne know that Rose is usually expensive. We have  4 cases available of the Fuente at $35.00 per bottle. That matches the lowest price in the country, AND IT IS DELIGHTFUL.   8

2010 Val Di Suga Brunello di Montalcino, Poggio  Al Granchio
$79 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
The 2010 vintage of Brunello was heralded as possibly the best of the last 100 years. There was an immediate run on the market when the 2010 Brunello's were originally released, consequently we were surprised when we met with the Val di Suga import rep ( Robert Dillon of Palm Bay Imports ) and realized that it was indeed a 2010 single vineyard  Poggio al Granchio  which he had  brought  for our consideration.

" Sure we will be happy to consider your highly touted Brunello-PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POUR SOME".

This is a highly layered Brunello. The nose is red fruit filled with brambly aspects and hints of dust. The front palate is brandied cherries which are distinct and infused with spice. The back palate becomes darker with length until you finally realize blueberry flavors have emerged. There is a hint if dust in the back palate which is reminiscent of Inglenook Cask Reserve or other high dollar Rutherford Bench Cabernet
We tasted the Val di Suga again last night with steaks, then open 3 hours the flavor profile stayed the same, just bigger, spicier and the tannin layer became very velvety. This wine was excellent with aged cheddar and incredibly sensational with my highly charred t- bone.  While writing this I (Rex) am tasting the final bit left in the bottle, which has been open now for 30 hours. The fruit is still bright and the wine is still highly structured which leads me to believe that Parker is right, this wine will drink well for another 15 years( review below) . Palm Bay gave us special pricing.

This is austere, with a dense matrix of tannins supporting cherry, tobacco, stone and leather flavors. Stays fresh, featuring a coating of dusty tannins on the finish. Best from 2018-2032.  93 points Robert Parker, 6 bottles remaining

2013 Val di Suga Rosso di Montalcino
$32.50 per;  5% off 6, 10% off 12
Yesterday we had the pleasure of tasting great Tuscan wines from the acclaimed producer, Val Di Suga. We tasted Brunello, single vineyard Brunello and we tasted their 2013  Rosso Di Montalcino. The subject of today's email is the Rosso or possibly better explained, finding connoisseur level wines at a value price . This Rosso is made from 100 percent Sangievetto Grosso, the Brunello clone. The Val Di Suga Rosso spends 15 months in neutral oak and this is not a negotiant, the fruit is all estate grown.  Val di Suga Brunellos rate in the above 90 category vintage after vintage, and reviewer after reviewer. The Rosso is not submitted for review, too much pretension for a modest wine.

About the wine; The 2013 Val di Suga Rosso di Montalcino exhibits a nose of cherry, rose petals and cinnamon. The front palate isrustic cherry, almost sweet, but then becomes bone dry at the mid palate and finishes with vivacious wild berry length.  Various spices including  cinnamon  are revealed in the finish, accented  with a bit of eucalyptus and excellent acidity.

-This Rosso will be incredible with smoked chicken, ribs and sausages., 6 bottles remaining

MERLOT
2012 Silverado Vineyards Mt George Vnyd Merlot, Coombsville, Napa Valley
Was $42.50, Today $38.50 per
Yesterday we received a sample of the 2012 Silverado Mt George Estate Merlot.  My, what a decadent red. There are violets on the nose which combine with ash
( volcanic soil ) and brambly spice.  Michele's first comment when tasting the Silverado was " there are definitely blueberries here".  There is a ton of blueberry on the front palate which darkens to boysenberry and finally blackberry. The finish is big dark berry flavors infused with smoke and cocoa. The 2012 Silverado Mt George Merlot is certainly a red meat wine which married wonderfully with the char and sirloin flavor of a big New York, but even without food I found myself going back to the bottle for another quick taste. This wine has wonderful complexity. When it comes down right down to it, there is little substitute for the right soil composition combined with climate and vine age. Mt George is legendary as a micro climate. Mt George is an ancient volcano. The soil composition of gravel and ancient volcanic ash combines with both warm days and cool nights. These vineyards were originally planted in 1865, meaning the soil has been naturally fertilized by the vines themselves for over a century. (drink now for 7 years )

2012 Trefethen Family Vineyards Oak Knoll Merlot
$34.95 per,  5% off 6, 10% off 12

Last week we were afforded the opportunity to taste current releases from Trefethen Family Winery. All of the wines were excellent and all of the wines are fairly priced To make things even better, they were kind enough to give us pricing which is more than fair. So speaking of "more than fair ", what is better than a complex, layered and highly polished special occasion red for under $35.00.

Now that you have read all that, we are speaking of the 2012 Trefethen Family Oak Knoll District Napa Merlot. If the specification "Merlot " in some way disturbs your sensibilities, think of this bottle as a top tier Bordeaux style Red because that is what it is. Four Bordeaux variatels are used in the blending of this seamless red. 3 different types of oak in both old and new are used to achieve complex layering. Possibly most importantly , Merlot likes some cool weather. The 2012 vintage was unusual in Napa given the days were typically warm but the nights were far cooler than normal, weather which resembles the right bank  of Bordeaux. All of this comes together to make for an excitingly seamless , highly polished bottle of wine.
The Flavor Profile
: Michele and I both were completely enamored by this Merlot at first sip ( out of 7 bottles this is the one we polished off completely) . Blueberry for days was the first conclusion which we both came to , and the flavor profile is packed with blueberry, some raspberry gets into the mix at mid palate and the finish is luxurious . We debated the  finish but my impression is mixed dark berry with white chocolate and a hint of allspice and clove. YUMMY REGARDLESS.  If  the 2012 Trefethen Merlot sounds like a bottle you would enjoy.

PINOT NOIR
2011 SEQUANA SANTA LUCIA HIGHLANDS PINOT NOIR
$29.00 5%off 6, 10% off 12
We sold the 2011 Sequana Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot back in the spring . We did very well with that offer, both initially and with continual great comments about the wine from those who gave it a try. The Hess people gave us both the same discounting for the end of the year and another bottle to taste over the holidays. We did that Christmas Eve. The Sequana was very good in the spring, it is sensational now. The cherry has become rich and velvety, and though there are many layers and complex flavors involved in the flavor profile, they move together in a seamless manor from beginning to end. This wine is at a stage of drinking which is complete harmony. The Sequana is darker in cherry with a finish laced in coffee and mocha and blueberry. One rarely experiences this sort of quality in a Pinot Noir under sixty or seventy dollars. The minute we pulled the cork on this one we knew we had opened a special occasion wine. $69.00 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
We tasted a variety of great Burgundy yesterday. Included in that tasting was Rene LeClerc Gevrey Chambertin 2013. This is one of the legendary wines of this very legendary appellation. I have not seen it for sale in the United States since my time at Marty's. This Burgundy is incredible. The purity of the cherry is simply over the top. The fruit is electric and very red. Layers apron layers of extremely exotic Asian spices are pronounced throughout the outstanding length of this Leclerc. We have 50 bottles available, correction only 24 left!!  We can offer them at $69. 5% off 6, 10% off 12.

That is a steal . At least at the table today, the Leclerc Gevrey out shined the Meo Camuzuet Clos de Vougeot pictured below and we pay $275 wholesale for the Clos de Vougeot. The best of the season! Rex
Do not know if you guys remember the Prieure Gevrey...this is every bit as good or even better. There were only 46 left - now only 24 left!!!!   I bought some for our holidays!!  I remember during the tasting Rex said he could drink this wine all day long....this is one of my markers of a great wine...drink all day, food or not, it is spectacular.  Michele 5 bottles remaining

2014 Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, OR
$37.50 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
ONE OF THE MOST FOOD WORTHY PINOTS WE HAVE HAD IN A LONG TIME!!
The 2014 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir epitomizes everything Sokol Blosser has stood for in nearly 45 years of winegrowing in Oregon. Crafted to be a true expression of terroir from our hillside vines and Jory soil, this wine is made from a low yield crop that is dry-farmed for quality and comprised of grapes that are all from Dijon, Pommard and Wadensvil clones.
The pinot noir grape is highlighted in every bottle -- a reflection of our winemaking style, elegant wines that express the pureness of our fruit and terroir. What has resulted is a wine with dark color and great intensity.

2001 Izarbe Rioja Gran Reserva, Spain
$43.50 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
We have purchased the last of the 2001 Izarbe Grand Reserva. This was easily one of the most compelling connoisseur level wines in our previous portfolio. We considered it an extreme value at $37.50 WHOLESALE

From our last review in 2016..
Fruit is bright and vibrant like a young wine. The spice is amazing and there is no funk to this Rioja it is polished and elegant.  You would never guess this was a 2001!!
100% Tempranillo -  This generous red is round and expressive, yet remains structured, with grip and depth. The plum, tobacco, sanguine and mineral flavors are harmonious and linger on the savory finish. Drink now through 2021. 2,500 cases made.  -TM   93  points Wine Spectator - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, 6 bottles remaining

2009 Ribera Del Duero, Cepa 21
$23.50 per, 10 off 6 or more
We have secured 7 cases of 2009 Ribera Del Duero, Cepa 21. We have it open now, it is a cherry raspberry monster with lots of spice. Elegant and rich, this Ribera is composed of Tempranillo splashed with Tinto Fino. The 2009 vintage is classic and this wine will cellar, but it absolutely excellent right now! Rich red fruit and velvety tannins makes this a classic pairing for holiday recipes.
I think it is better than the multiple 91 point reviews below. R
"The 2009 Cepa 21 is from 15- to 25-year-old vines and aged in new French and American oak for 14 months. It has a very impressive bouquet with dark red fruit, wild strawberry, hints of dark chocolate and again, just a distant scent of lavender. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, crisp acidity and a very well-defined, vibrant finish with cranberry and wild strawberry that is very satisfying. Bon vin!"  91 points Robert Parker

"Glass-staining ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced aromas of dark berry compote, cola and violet, with subtle vanilla and underbrush nuances. Broad and sweet on the palate, offering ripe blackberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and slow-mounting smokiness. The floral note comes back on the finish, which clings with impressive tenacity and focus. Shows good energy for a ripe vintage."  91 points Vinous / Antonio Galloni

Roasted black-fruit, horsehide and rubbery aromas filter onto a tannic palate with all sorts of fruit extract and pulp for support. This is a rich, ripe wine from a warm vintage with tons of berry power, oak, herbal notes, tobacco and prune on the flavor profile. The finish is ripe, with spice and licorice flavors. 91 Wine Enthusiast,

Bright ruby.  Red and dark berry aromas show very good clarity, with spice and floral notes providing added lift.  Juicy and precise on the palate, offering focused raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of candied rose.  Finishes bright and long, with resonating spice and cherry notes.  This wine is quite suave, and surprisingly drinkable now, but it has the balance to age. 91 Stephen Tanzer,

2011 Monte Castrillo Ribera Del Duoro; Designation Monte Castrillo
  •  Variety :  Tempranillo
  • Appellation Ribera del Duero, Northern Spain
  • Winery Finca Torremilanos

Michele and I tried this Ribera last week with the intention of including it in the Classic Café tasting " Wines for grilled foods". That tasting is tonight and has booked out at 60 people. We pulled this Monte Castrillo when we found out that there is only 3 cases, not enough to include and sell. We tried it with hickory smoked chicken and sausage.  We thought it a lovely grilled food wine which showed both textbook cherry with some layers of blackberry and a long finish. GIVEN THAT THE COST IS $12.50, this would be a hard wine not to recommend for getting your Weber on. 12 bottles remaining

PASA ROBLES
If want a big mellow wine, this is definitely fits the bill!

We do a discussion tasting at Classic Café in Roanoke once a month.  Last night was our September tasting and the subject was "wines for fall recipes".  We tasted a considerable number of wines looking for those that are immediately of age and table worthy, pair exceptionally with dishes like roast and chili, stews and even hearty Bolognese.  We found a few.  As always, wines with value to dollar ratio is an essential qualifying point in determining the wines we decide to present.  We will be talking about each of these wines in the next few days.  Today we are starting with the most limited, the 2011 Cypher Anarchy, Pasa Robles Before revealing the great components in this blend, let us assure you, this wine is not over the top fruity, grapey, bubble gummy or in any way shows a lack of complexity or sophistication.  The 2011 Anarchy is composed of 36% Zinfandel, 36% Mourvedre and 28% Syrah.  The Zin comes across old-style and raspberry, like the mid to late 80s Ridge Zins.  Anarchy spends years in the cellar before release to soften and integrate the Mourvedre and Syrah.  The result is a spicy Chateauneuf du Pape-like wine showing both red and black fruit and a delightful infusion of black pepper at the finish.  The nose is filled with dusty violets.  The tannins are supple and not at all aggressive.  The Anarchy is a 700 case production.  This wine is a normal $39.99 and indeed is the lowest price we found on the net.

PS, we found no professional reviews, but this wine received an average point score of 90 points and great consumer comments on CellarTracker.

2011 Stolpman Vineyards ANGELI
100% Syrah, Total Production: 300 cases
$68.00 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
The 2011 Angeli is a personal favorite of mine. The vintage was exceptional in its quality. 2011 had a cooler than average growing season, similar to 2010, but without the huge heat storm. This weather combined with a late spring season frost event that greatly reduced yields, produced spectacularly concentrated and balanced grapes. Never before nave I seen a vintage that produced wines with so much nuance depending on the origin of their climate and soil type. At Stolpman our Syrah vines planted in pure limestone produced the best wines - mineral, elegant, powerful, and complex. The cuvee was fermented with grapes from both older vines from our 1998 planting and younger vines that come from our "own-rooted" vineyards planted in 2006. 33% stems were included in the fermentations. The 2011 Angeli will be extremely long-lived and will reach its plateau early. If you decide to drink this early, long decanting is recommended. Sashi Moorman, Winemaker 2 bottles remaining

2012 Stolpman Vineyards LA CROCE    50% Syrah/50% Sangiovese, Total Production: 750 cases
$69.00 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
For such a massive wine, the nose gives off a whimsical red berry fruit aroma atop a core of new leather and lush forest floor. As the young, primary wine opens, attractive cocoa appears and the wine becomes more inviting. In the mouth, pulsating red fruit on top of Right Bank earthiness wows the un-indoctrinated - this is serious wine. The red fruit seems alive, as if still hanging on the vine. Well integrated with soft tannin bonded to a long fruit finish, and just when the wine seems over, one more intense pop of fruit resurges. Tasting library vintages of La Croce, I note an anise component that I only pick up in top notch Bordeaux-varietal wines. This dark bordelaise character signifies the uniqueness of this co-fermented field blend. 5 bottles remaining

2014 Stolpman Vineyards ESTATE SYRAH    100% Syrah, Total Production: 4200 cases
$29.00 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
The dark density of the wine compliments the bright fruit profile bursting with tangerine and fresh red fruit.   While the 2014 Estate Syrah certainly reflects the warmth of the vintage, the wine still shows a lively tartness that indicates a long life ahead of it. The ability to combine birght, lively fruit with pleasurable richness has become the signature of Ballard Canyon Syrah. 2014 showcases the middle ground - not jammy or gloppy like a warmer climate Syrah - but not austere and hollow like many young cold climate Syrahs.   Justa baby now, the primary flavors will surely unfurl into more complex, seamless layers. While the ideal drinking window begins around 2018, our leap forward in winemaking methodology allows for early enjoymenet as well. 6 bottles remaining

WHITE WINE
2012 Lo and Behold Napa White Blend (less than 100 cases produced)
The Lo and Behold project is one in which six acclaimed Napa winemakers came together under one label. They were given virtually unlimited resources. They had access to the best grapes, the best  barrels and best facilities with which to create wines of their particular vision. They did not make much. less that 100 cases per vision. Cult winemaker Chris Matthiasson decided to make a European field blend all with Napa fruit. This wine is harmonic in that all of the varietals blend, and then come together with a big crescendo. The nose is melon and white flowers. The flavor profile is honey dew combined with nectarine. This wine is both an east drink and powerful. Light, refreshing and palate pleasing at front palate, the finish becomes very big in nectarine, orange blossom and white flowers. Highly crafted!
Release at $49.00-$59.00 we have 44 bottles at $32.50 per

a co-ferment (in 20% new barrels) of Sauvignon Blanc (59%) and Sémillon (16%) from Ryans Vineyard in the south of Napa with Ribolla Gialla (20%) and Tocai Friulano (5%) from Vare Vineyard at the mouth of Napa's Dry Creek canyon.

2012 Ancien Carneros Chardonnay
$35.00 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12,
We have 5 cases of the 2012 Ancien Carneros Chardonnay. They made a total of 520 cases. This is a full bodied Chard made in the style of white Burgundy. We tasted it at room temperature and found zero flaws. This Chard has extreme complexity due in large to the components used in its creation. The vines are from the original Wente and Robert Young clone plantings. The fruit comes both the Napa and the Sonoma side of Carneros. Though both sides get the cooling breezes which Chardonnay so loves.  Mineral components are  different with the Napa fruit being richer in volcanic soil and Sonoma fruit polished by kimmeridgean minerality, so when blended in a single bottleing the result is a multi- layered combination of flavors. Both new and old French Oak was used in the finishing, so there is oak but this Chard is in no way over oaked. The flavor profile carries a component of lemon meringue and honey dew from the beginning to the finish but along the way there is peanut and pistachio, orange blossom and zest. The nose is filled with flowers and that floral component is found at mid palate and continues through a big finish of apricot and spice. Oh and there is butter, the kind which develops in Premiere Cru Chassagne, and this Chard will remind one of Chassagne Montrachet.  The lowest price we could find on this release is $40.00 and at forty we think it blows away the $60.00 Chards we have tasted.

P.S. Excellent structure, this one will drink an easy 5 years. R

2014 Fess Parker Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County CA
$29.50 per, 5% off 6, 10% off 12
The 2014 Chardonnay Ashley's is laced with lemon confit, jasmine, mint, sweet spice
and lightly buttered notes, all of which are nicely woven together. Mid-weight, precise
and nuanced, the Ashley's is very nicely done. This is an especially restrained, classy
style for the Sta. Rita Hills."  93 points Vinous / Antonio Galloni

"Always one of my favorite whites from Fess Parker, the 2014 Chardonnay Ashley's
Vineyard is primarily from the Rancho Las Hermanas Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills (all
sandy soils) and is barrel-fermented and aged nine months in 30% new French oak.
Ripe peach orchard fruits and tons of salty minerality emerge from this fleshy, textured, medium-bodied Chardonnay that has a great mix of richness and freshness. Drink over the coming 2-4 years. "  92 points The Wine Advocate
"Light aromas of beeswax, crushed chalk and scratch lemon skins emerge steadily on the nose of this single vineyard bottling, which carries lots of life and would thrive in a cellar. The chalky texture of the palate frames red apple, yellow pear, lime rind and sea salt flavors, with lots of acidic sizzle." 92 points Wine Enthusiast
"There's clean vibrancy to this chardonnay, grown on a sandy hillside 12 miles from the Pacific. Its juicy yellow-raspberry flavor is confidently ripe, yet tightens in the end on salty coastal acidity, pithy rather than fat. For salt cod croquettes."  91 points Wine & Spirits   6 bottles remaining
