I know it's only February, and summer seems like a distant dream, but, here at Lakehill, summer camp preparations are in full swing! Calendars are being set; camp descriptions are being finalized; and the Lakehill Summer Camps staff is busy planning a summer full of fun and adventure.
As this process unfolds, a single thought keeps coming back to me: I wish I were a kid again!
This year's camp lineup looks fabulous! STEM, Community Connections, LEGO Engineering, Destination Dallas, and other perennial favorites are all lined up and ready to go, but it's the new kids on the block that have me really excited!
Thirty Seconds to Fame challenges kids to create the ultimate summer blockbuster movie trailers to hint at the bigger tales to be told.
Summer with the Bard gives older campers a taste of Elizabethan verse, Shakespeare-style.
Slithery, Scaly Snakes promises some up-close encounters with our forked-tongued friends. And,
Games: Unplugged will remind campers that kids survived (and enjoyed!) the summer months long before entertainment involved plugs or batteries.
These quirky, new, outside-the-box camps are exactly the kind of camps I would have enjoyed as a kid, and I'd love nothing more than to roll back the clock and sign up! I'm so thrilled at the creativity and energy that our summer camp teachers have put into their camps already, and I can't wait to see their ideas unfold as the months roll on.

Lakehill Students Go Wild for Heart Health

February is National Heart Month, and
students are learning how to take care of their own hearts, while raising funds for life saving research.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States.
These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball, while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues.
Students can find out more and raise money online here or here. Students who collect donations can earn the Zoo Crew characters on a lanyard as a thank you for supporting the American Heart Association. Any student who gets at least a $5 donation will receive Rory the Lion and an online donation will earn Mr. Tuskers as well. Students can continue collecting all their favorite Zoo Crew animals as they reach new fundraising levels: Savannah Bolt ($85 online), Jade Shoots ($20), Jenny Kicks ($35), and Finley Chillerton ($100).
Hoops for Heart is for students in grades 4-8 and was held on February 8. The big winner of the knockout tournament this year was seventh grader
Mitchell Crow and runner-up was fourth grader
Drew Perry. On February 14, Jump Rope for Heart was held in the gym for students in kindergarten through grade 3. It was a festive event with kids teaming up with creative team names to all take turns jumping rope for a great cause.
This year, in lieu of receiving additional prizes for their efforts, Lakehill students are donating all the prizes to four organizations that work with homeless and under-served children: Vogel Alcove, Interfaith Housing Coalition, Voice of Hope, and Brother Bill's Helping Hand.

Third Grade Presents Living Wax Museum

On February 9, Lakehill's third grade students stepped into a museum. Not as visitors, but this time as the exhibits themselves.
To culminate a unit on Texas heroes and explorers, students had the unique opportunity to bring the person that they had researched to life, complete with amazing costumes, backdrops, and props. Students wrote their own speeches that they presented to a large audience in the auditorium.
Explorers and heroes, including Fray Marcos de Niza, Sieur de La Salle, and Lady Bird Johnson filled the auditorium stage and aisles. One by one, they shared their stories and their contributions to Texas.
"We are so proud of the students' hard work and creativity," said third grade teacher Kelly Curtis. "It was great to see the students celebrate Texas History in such an exciting way."

Fourth Grade Presents Mini Musical
|
To coincide with their study of American history, Lakehill's fourth grade students brought history to life as they performed the mini-musical, Shh! We're Writing the Constitution by Carmino Ravosa on February 15 for Lower School students and parents.
The story focuses on the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the trials and tribulations of the delegates as they worked to create an ordered system of government.
The cast featured the fourth grade students as delegates to the Convention, and included Ryan Motes as George Washington, Jack Curtis as James Madison, Gabi Vann as Alexander Hamilton, and Gabby Therivel as Benjamin Franklin. Soloists included Paulette Maney, Connor Sullivan, Caiti Muller, Austin Rutherford, Lauren Williams, Adeline Born, Lola Salas, and Esther Neerman. The students were under the direction of Linda Booth.

Students Enjoy Roman Banquet
|
Lakehill's halls were invaded by Trojan warriors, togas, and mystical creatures on February 11 as the seventh and eighth grade Latin classes marched their way back in time to attend the annual Roman Banquet.
Each year, students travel to Stratos Global Greek Taverna to dine like Roman royalty on ancient delicacies that would make any Roman's mouth water. "The best part of the Roman Banquet is always the food," says eighth grader
Sarah Smith. "It makes you feel like you're actually a part of the culture," said seventh grader
Luke Williams. "I also really liked the corny jokes." The students take this trip in conjunction with their study of Ancient Civilizations and Latin.
Once they arrive, students are treated to an afternoon full of feasting, as well as Latin and history trivia Bingo and a costume contest.

"Lakehill's 17th annual Roman Banquet was outstanding, thanks to the incredible leadership and collaboration of our eighth grade committee," said Latin teacher
Victoria John. "They wrote the script, planned the Bingo game, the costume contest, and orchestrated the program."

Update from Headmaster Roger Perry
|
Our construction crew has been making good progress over the past few weeks. The nice weather has certainly been beneficial.
The roofers will have the building "dried in" by the beginning of next week. The plumbers have installed the initial plumbing in the walls and ceiling. The electricians are making progress with the installation of conduit and boxes for the electrical lines, and the fire sprinkler installation is underway.
Over winter break, the main electrical line near the gym was connected to the new building. In the next two weeks, the water proofers will do their work, and the brick masons will start the brick work on the building's exterior.
Spring Break will provide a time to make the pass through from the old building to the new one. Everything is still on track for us to have full utilization of the building for the 2017-2018 school year.

NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Nicholas Morvay
Nicholas "Nick" Morvay has attended Lakehill since the sixth grade. He has had many wonderful times at Lakehill, but his favorite memory is helping coach the Middle School Football team. As a member of Lakehill's Varsity Football team, Nick has experience to share. He also enjoys participating in Varsity Track and Field. Nick's favorite classes are film-making and broadcasting.
Nick is also an extremely funny man, and performs stand-up comedy outside of school. He also enjoys playing his guitar and has been inspired by Jimi Hendrix.
Nick's father has made the biggest impact on his life. He has learned many lessons from his father and from his experience at Lakehill. His advice for young Warriors is "Do your homework."
Nick hopes to attend Texas Tech, but is keeping his options open. He plans to study music production and music theory which are his passions. He dreams one day of owning a recording studio and producing music.
Nick has always been a real inspiration to those around him, especially to me and everyone else on last year's Middle School Football team. He is the coach who inspired us and helped us go undefeated.

Varsity Girls Basketball
The Varsity Girls Basketball team won its final district game on February 9 against Cristo Rey, finishing the season 12-0 in District and clinching the title of District Champions for the third consecutive year.
The Lady Warriors are enjoying a first-round playoff bye to rest up as they start the playoffs on Tuesday, February 21, with a home game at 6:00 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
Varsity Boys Basketball
The Varsity Boys Basketball team ended the season on a high note on February 9, walking away with a 52-47 victory at Cristo Rey.

Middle School Boys Basketball - IAA
The Eighth Grade Boys Basketball team began the IAA Playoffs hosting the Winston Eagles on February 9. Lakehill got off to a fast start and never looked back. The Warriors were up 28-3 at half, and finished with an easy 49-18 victory.
Scoring was balanced, with seven different players contributing points. Nathan Lewis and Christian Barefoot each had 12 points, and Ryan Henry added 11.
On February 14, Lakehill hosted Garland Christian in the Semifinal round. The game was back-and-forth throughout. Several times the Warriors jumped out to early leads, but the hot-shooting Swordsmen fought back. Lakehill trailed 25-23 at the half after a GCA half-court buzzer-beating shot. The Warriors led 32-30 starting the fourth quarter. They took over from there, outscoring GCA 17-9 on their way to a 49-39 win. Barefoot led the way with 17 points, while Henry and Lewis added 12 and 11, respectively.
Andrew Ward played tough defense under the basket, and
Matthew McCall did the same on the perimeter.
Lakehill is now 14-0 and will return to the IAA Championship for the third time in the last four years. The Warriors will face another stout opponent in DeSoto Canterbury, also undefeated on the season. Lakehill is the host school for the IAA Championships this year. The Girls Championship between Zion Lutheran and DeSoto Canterbury will tip-off at 5.:00 p.m, followed by the Boys Championship at 6:00 p.m. Come out and support the boys as they play for the win!
Middle School Girls Basketball
The Middle School Girls Basketball team
concluded a great season last on February 9. The team traveled to Zion Lutheran to play in the semi-finals of the IAA league playoffs. Though they were down most of the game, the girls never gave up and fought until the end. The team finished the season 7-6, with eighth graders Grace Addison and Hayden Yoss named to the North Conference All-Star team.
Middle School Boys Basketball - Seventh Grade
The Seventh Grade Boys Basketball team
finished off a great season
with
a 49-22 win at First Baptist Academy on February
9. The team was led by Brett Peacock who had 16 points and Mitchell Crow who had 14. The Warriors, who had to deal with a rowdy away crowd and some calls going against them, led only 21-14 at the half.
The Warriors regrouped at halftime and outscored FBA 28-8 in the second half. Also scoring for Lakehill were Cullen McCaleb with 9, Alex Dondis 7, and Luke Stout 3. The Warriors end the season winning eight out of the last nine games to finish 8-4.

The Varsity Soccer team lost to
Irving the Highlands on
February
9. The February 14 game against Cristo Rey was rained out and will be played on Friday, February 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Lakehill. The Warriors take the field tonight at 6:00 p.m. against Dallas Lutheran. A special Senior Night celebration will be held prior to the game.

- Lower School parents will receive an appointed time from the Lower School teachers and, therefore, do not need to call the office to schedule an appointment.
- All appointments for Middle and Upper School must be scheduled by speaking with Mrs. Kidder. We will be unable to schedule voice message requests or e-mail requests for conference appointments.
