FRIDAY ETHICS

End-of-life care with Rabbi Meyers
Last week we were privileged to hear from Dr. David Aboulafia who  led our students in a deep discussion about physician aid-in-dying (PAD).  Students grappled with many questions and the concept of PAD as Dr. Aboualfia walked them through different definitions and patient experiences. Students asked questions ranging from the clarification of the Washington Death with Dignity Act, to how to define "terminally ill," to personal thoughts regarding family members. Dr. Aboulafia allowed students to explore the topic of PAD, supported their curiosity and offered his own personal anecdotes.  Dr. Aboulafia's presentation was sophisticated and nuanced. He really inspired thought and continued discussion among our students and faculty.

Today we continued this important discussion. Rabbi Meyers created an hour-long program that explored Jewish texts and philosophies surrounding end-of-life care. The program began with a Beit Midrash experience during which our students were split into five groups and, led by one of our Judaic faculty members, learned a number of sources that explored concepts including extending life vs. prolonging death, the refusal of medical treatment, how we make decisions with our bodies, the value of human life, and more. After thirty minutes everyone came back together. A representative from each group presented on the conversations that took place. Rabbi Meyers facilitated the connection between all of these sources and drew our attention to the importance of touching base with halachic values when making such crucial decisions.

Thank you to Dr. Aboulafia for last week's presentation, and to all of our students and teachers for having such meaningful discussions.

Harry Jacoby's Rice is Nice Campaign
Harry Jacoby
© Meryl Alcabes Photography
At NYHS, all students complete 24 hours of community service per year. Harry Jacoby (2020) volunteers regularly at St. Mary's Food Bank, and is taking his commitment to the next level. "The last couple times my mom and I volunteered at St. Mary's, we noticed that a lot of Asian community members did not have many choices. There were many great items (like flavored cream cheese, cottage cheese, and stuffing mix), but as new immigrants, they weren't familiar with these and left politely passing hopes of something that was a better fit culturally."

Harry is answering the call by starting the Rice is Nice campaign. Harry's goal is to collect 72 bags of Trader Joe's Jasmine Rice that he will deliver to the food bank. Each bag contains 3 pounds of rice and costs only $2.99.

Here are a few easy ways you can help:
  1. Buy a 3 pound bag of jasmine rice from TJs and bring it to Harry in school
  2. Send a check for $2.99 to 3121 Cascadia Ave. S., Seattle, WA 98144, give Harry $3 in cash at school, or send $3 to the Paypal account at [email protected] and Harry will buy rice on your behalf
  3. Bring in any food items and Harry is happy to deliver them for you

The Forgetting River - A Modern Tale of Survival, Identity and the Inquisition
WHAT: Deep in every family history is a mystery of who we really are. The Forgetting River is an unexpected and moving story of an American journalist who unravels her Catholic family's long and buried Sephardic Jewish ancestry in Spain. As Doreen Carvajal searches for proof that her family was forced through the Inquisition to convert to Christianity 600 years ago, she moves into a mystical white pueblo on Spain's southern frontier to crack the secret messages left by hidden Jews-an ancient cry from the past. She comes to understand that her family's history flows like a river through time- and that while the truth might be submerged, it is never truly lost. Join Seattle University, the Seattle Sephardic Network and Joel and Maureen Benoliel for a presentation by Doreen Carvajal, followed by a Kosher reception. RSVP and register  by emailing Lizetta Solarik at   [email protected]. Click here for the official flyer.
