Academics:
Boeing Internship Informational Night  
An amazing internship opportunity with Boeing (at the El Segundo location) for current juniors interested in pursuing a career in Engineering. This unpaid summer internship provides PVPUSD students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math. The program lasts for 8 weeks (June-August), and students will earn 10 elective credits and letter grade upon completion. This opportunity is only available to a select few students. 
All those interested need to attend the informational evening to hear about the program from the Boeing Internship Supervisor and to get an application. Selected applicants will be chosen for an interview.

Are you interested in studying Blue-Footed Boobies?  Have you ever dreamed of observing the Galapagos Giant Tortoise in its natural habitat?  Did you know that there are Marine Iguanas found in Galapagos that are found nowhere else in the world?
The 13th Annual Galapagos Research Expedition is a summer program that includes a 10-day research excursion to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands that focuses on the ecological niche of organisms through observational studies.  This is an intensive course in the use of field-based and general research methods related to Galapagos wildlife.  The course will run from July 26-August 8, 2017 and then continue on into the 2017-2018 academic school year as students will enroll in Science Research 2.
Students earn an entire year (10 credits) of high school Science Research 1 credits in the summer and can earn an optional 3 units of college credits from Lees McRae College in North Carolina. Please email Mrs. Munoz at [email protected] with any questions.
Student Recruitment Meetings will be held  Wednesday, February 8th and Thursday, February 9th at lunch in Mrs. Muñoz's Room (Room 210). 
Parent Informational Meeting will be Thursday, February 9th at 6:30pm in Room 210.

American Math Competition 10 & 12

The American Math Competition, AMC 10 & 12, will be given at PV High on Wed, Feb 15th, 8:00am - 9:30am. This national contest, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), is used to identify, recognize, and reward excellence in math. It is open to all students at PV High and all Honors Math students should take it.  It is a great way to practice advanced problem solving and to exercise your brain.  A $5 fee covers the cost of purchasing the exams.  Please sign up with your math teacher, and contact Mrs. Norris ([email protected]) with any questions.

Harbor College Offers Business 1 Class at PVHS for Spring Semester!



Starting on February 6th, Business 1 will be held at PVHS on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3 pm in Room 324.  Interested in enrolling in this class?  Click  HERE for the required K-12 Approval Form.

National Youth Science Camp



The National Youth Science Camp is a residential science education program for young STEM enthusiasts the summer after they graduate from high school. Students from around the country (two are selected to represent each state and Washington, D.C.) are challenged academically in exciting lectures and hands-on studies, and have voluntary opportunities to participate in an outdoor adventure program, gain a new and deep appreciation for the great outdoors, and establish friendships that last a lifetime.

Counseling and College & Career Center:

Attention Parent of Juniors: 

The Counselors will be holding a Junior Parent Presentation on February 8th at 8:30AM and 6:30PM in the MPR.



Both presentations will cover the same information so parents should join us for the presentation that best fits their schedule. The purpose of this evening is to review graduation requirements, College admissions information, testing information, and the letter of recommendation procedures. Counselors will discuss the importance of finding an appropriate College match for the student and topics to consider when developing a College list. Services from the College and Career Center and the Naviance program will also be reviewed. Counselors will discuss in depth the College application process, including types of admission options, eligibility index vs. committee selection, and parts of the application folder. Finally, counselors will also briefly cover other program information such as NCAA requirements, essays and personal statements, and College visits. We hope to see you there!

SENIORS,  Cal Grant Awards are already being generated by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC).   In order to qualify you must meet GPA and financial need criteria.  The Cal Grant GPA data was successfully uploaded by PVHS in November (unless you opted out).  In order to be considered for the Cal Grant Awards, seniors must also submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  If you have NOT filed the FAFSA, please do so before the deadline posted by the college/university to which you applied.  To access the FAFSA website, click on the following link:    https://fafsa.ed.gov/.  To manage your Cal Grants online, the CSAC has created WebGrants 4 Students (WGS).  To create an account, please log onto 
https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/logon.asp.  Creating an account will allow you to view updates and make corrections if necessary.
 
Scholarship Deadlines through February 10 :   We are in the midst of scholarship season!  NOW IS THE TIME TO APPLY.  To access more information on these scholarships and others, please log onto NAVIANCE. Click on the COLLEGES tab and then scroll down to SCHOLARSHIPS and MONEY. Click on SCHOLARSHIP LIST. At this point, select the scholarship of interest. In many cases, you will be directed to a website for the application. In other instances, you may be able to download the application directly from NAVIANCE.

Athletics:

Equestrian:
PVHS competed in two OCIEL shows this past weekend. For Show #3: In Varsity Hunters/Eq, Erin Melville placed  2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 5th and 5th in the medal. She was Reserve Champion in her division. Celine Claessens placed  3rd, 1st, 1st and 4th place ribbons, and was also Reserve Champion. Nadia Innab placed 5th, 5th, 1st and 1st in the medal. In Novice Dressage, Sammy Weiss placed 1st and 1st, and was Champion in her division. Seraphine Sun placed 2nd. In Training Dressage, Marianna Graziadio placed 1st and 2nd and Emma Glaser placed 3rd and 3rd. In Dressage Third Level, Kristyna Lukacova placed 1st and 1st. In Western Novice, Kate Valente placed 5th,1st, 5th and 4th in the medal. Congratulations and great job girls!

Girls Water Polo:
It was a winning week for Girls Water Polo. The team was busy with 7 games and ended up 5-2. The wins included a non-league win 16-9, over El Segundo and a 22-2 league win over West Torrance. In tournament action, the team had wins over Upland, La Habra, and Foothill Tech.

Two big league matches loom with Redondo on Monday and Peninsula on Wednesday.

Boys Soccer:
The boys team was 2-1 this week with 2 wins over Morningside (one game was a make up of a rainout) and a loss to Mira Costa.

The two remaining league games this week have major implications in the league standings. On Tuesday, PV will host Redondo and on Thursday, PV will host Peninsula.

Girls Soccer:
The Sea Kings had two wins this week in league play. The team beat Mira Costa 1-0 on Tuesday and then beat Morningside on Friday.

The team can wrap up a 3rd consecutive league title this week with a road game against Redondo on Tuesday and another road game at Peninsula on Thursday.

Boys Basketball:
Two tough losses have the Sea Kings in need of some wins in the final week of league play. The team lost to Mira Costa 67-53 on Tuesday and then lost to Redondo 73-64 on Friday in an exciting game.

This week, the team travels to Morningside on Tuesday and then hosts Peninsula on Thursday.

Girls Basketball:
Like the boys, the girls team found tough competition this week in the Bay League. On Tuesday, Mira Costa was victorious 52-27 and on Friday it was Redondo 64-20.

The girls team has the same schedule this week as the boys,  the team travels to Morningside on Tuesday and then hosts Peninsula on Thursday.

All Pro Dad Breakfast at PV High!
Free Breakfast! Our next All Pro Dad Breakfast is on Wednesday, February 15 (Late Start, A Day) from 8:00-8:50am in the Gym (or later if your student doesn't have a zero period class). Steve Heffernan, PVHS Surf Coach and Young Life Area Director, will lead our dads, sons and daughters through a discussion about ways to enhance communication with each other while embracing technology as a powerful aid in that effort. Co-Chairs Craig Quinn and Joe Alessi will moderate the meeting. Please RSVP to Diane Imbach at [email protected] and note number of adults and students in your RSVP no later than Sunday, February 12. We look forward to sharing breakfast with you and your kids!

PEF:

Peninsula Education Foundation will award two $1,500 scholarships
to students in the graduation class of 2017 who are continuing their education at the post-secondary level. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and maintained enrollment for two years prior to graduation. Application deadline is March 1, 2017 at 11:59 pm.
Only online applications will be accepted. The application and more detailed information can be found at www.pvpef.org under "Scholarships."
