We Can't Stay Here

They should have known.

They should have known when Jesus found them, strangers minding their own business on the seashore and called out, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people."

They should have known when Jesus sat down on the mountainside and spoke the most ridiculous words with such complete and utter sincerity that no one dared laugh, "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account."

They should have known when Jesus did not hesitate to answer a disciple's perfectly reasonable request with, "Follow me and let the dead bury their own dead."

They should have known when Jesus sent them out without silver or gold or copper, without a bag, without a spare change of clothes, without a fee for service, but only with instructions to do the impossible and the rallying cry of, "See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves."

They should have known when Jesus always seemed to be going of his way to bring them into conflict with the religious leaders-by eating with sinners and tax collectors, by healing and plucking grain on the Sabbath, by attracting attention, by speaking out against them, by refusing to play their games.

They should have known when Jesus foretold his suffering, death, and resurrection, and in the next breath, invited them all to "deny themselves, and take up their cross and follow me."

They should have known.

That this mountain top moment was just a stop along the way. That this bright clarity was just a fleeting vision. That the peaceful moment in heaven's spotlight would soon be rudely interrupted. That their time of being set apart from the crowd, the world, the trouble, the risk, it was all just temporary. That any rising feelings of pride in their own discipleship would soon be dashed to the ground.

That too soon, Jesus would simply turn and walk down the mountain, and without a word let them know what they should have known all along, "we can't stay here."

Ash Wednesday and Lent
Next Wednesday, March 1

Please join us for Ash Wednesday worship service on Wednesday, March 1. Services are at 12:00 and 7:15 p.m. Due to Ash Wednesday, there will not be Faith Feast or Faith Night activities.

Midweek Lenten Series: Let All of Me Kneel before God's Holy Name

Evening Prayer will be held on Wednesday nights during Lent from 7:15 - 7:45p.m.. Our theme for reflection will focus on the central role of worship in our lives of faith. By a variety of Biblical readings we will see the many ways worship involves the total person. Our series will be based on Psalm 103:1, "Bless the Lord all my soul and all that is within me, bless his holy name. A closer look at this familiar verse indicates that our entire bodies, not just our heads are engaged in worship. We will see how our ears, voice, hands, knees and feet come together to form an authentic experience of giving praise.

Family Promise: Spring Break Week - We Need Your Help!

family promis
Spring break is March 12-18. It is also Faith's week to host homeless families in the Gathering House. We know many travel that week, but also many of you may not be, and we encourage you to please consider helping as hosts for an evening dinner or stay overnight. We need more people willing to serve in this ministry, and to be an evening or overnight host could not be easier, yet be a more essential role in this ministry to serve the less fortunate. And it's right here on Faith's premises... a great parent/child service opportunity! If you're a first-time volunteer, you'll be given full instructions on this easy-to-do service. Bonus: students who volunteer with their parents can earn service/silver cord hrs. What better way to take advantage of free time during spring break? Can you help?

Signup sheet for volunteers is on a table in the Commons. Please note: if you have not previously done so, adult volunteers for evening or overnight hosting will be asked to sign a consent for a background check which will be done by Julie Crane. This is a new requirement by the Des Moines Area Family Promise Board. If you have any questions about the volunteer roles, please feel free to contact Bob at [email protected], or Lynnette at [email protected]. Thank you!
