The Power of Play
by Carla Goldberg
Preschool Director

This year the Preschool and Kindergarten decided to embark on a study of play. When you walk into the preschool, you will first notice our "The Power of Play" bulletin board in the reception area, displaying what famous people had to say about play. At Akiba we believe that play is children's work; children learn everything through play. Play strengthens their social skills, fosters problem solving and conflict resolution, develops fine and gross motor skills, increases their imagination, and works on communication skills. Through play, children also learn how to be better contributors to their classroom community and beyond.

Play study board by the Lime Room

With our play study we wanted to make visible all the learning that happens in our classrooms through different types of play, and each classroom's display board showcases one type of play and its associated skills. Please view them in the downstairs hallway! The Green Room focused on the dramatic play of being doctors; Ready!Set!Go! created a video that "a play is play" - and acted out the stories of Dear Zoo and Owl Babies (check it out at the viewing station in the preschool hallway!). In Parent/Tot explored different materials and messed about with ice and light. The Purple Room shared their daily story-writing. Kindergarten documented block building. The Lime Room loves to cook and portrayed their children participating in "play cooking." They have been studying space and created a giant rocket ship out of blocks and other materials. They have been studying space and created a giant rocket ship out of blocks and other materials. The Blue Room embarked on a study of space and created a giant rocket ship. In the Yellow Room the children built Lego structures, focusing on fine motor skills, math and cooperative learning.

Every day at Akiba, "life skills" are developed through play. Our teachers facilitate these thoughtful and intentional play experiences because they are aware of the skills children develop through play. We hope you'll take a few moments to learn from our play study so that, when your child arrives home and you ask what she did in preschool all day, and the answer you receive is "I played," you will understand and appreciate this crucial time of development that helps our children be successful in life.

This Sunday is Family Day in Israel and the Preschool and Kindergarten are holding an impromptu gathering to celebrate our families from 3:45 - 5:00 p.m.  We want to learn what play looks like at your home, so please bring a family game to share with others at our celebration. Hope to see you there!

Shabbat Shalom and enjoy some time playing this weekend!

These days, the Green Room is all about kings, queens, and castles as they are getting ready for Purim. The children are turning the classroom's loft into a castle using "bricks" made by painting cardboard with legos. They have also been dressing up as kings and queens and really enjoyed tracing a castle that was projected onto a white board.

The
Yellow Room started a study on space. This is Colette working on a drawing of planets, stars, and nebulas.

Grades 1-8
grades

The Hebrew reading contest kicked off with buddies reading to each other.

Morah Dorit's Kitah Dalet
(4th grade Hebrew class) worked on matching the 15 pictures from Megilat Esther with the Hebrew phrases that go with them. The class was split into three groups, and the students had to not only match the pictures to the phrases but also put them in order. The winner was the group that finished first with the fewest mistakes.

Mr. Salk is so thankful for the help he gets in the
1st/2nd grade classroom every day. Here Mrs. Schiller reads with Lani.

After learning Perek Gimmel, Chapter 3, of Sefer Shmuel Alef (First Book of Samuel),
Mrs. Gold's 5th/6th grade Tanach class split into groups and performed skits of their interpretations of the Perek. The story relates the first time that G-d communicated with Shmuel, and students saw how at first he didn't even realize that it was G-d who was talking to him.

In the spirit of the 100th Day of School, Mrs. Levine's 3rd/4th grade math students counted out red mancala pieces and put them in groups of 100. They got to 482. The class also made a list of the 100 activities they've done so far this year.

Last Shabbat many of the 7th and 8th graders joined together in West Rogers Park for a
Shabbaton, organized by Mrs. Gold. They had a wonderful Shabbat Dinner together and split up to different host homes for lunch. The Bnot Sherut planned great activities, and everyone came back to Mrs. Gold's house for Seudah Slishit and Havdalah.

P.E. Update

by Sara Price

Physical education classes are in the middle of the volleyball unit. 3rd through 8th graders are learning to set, bump, pass, and serve. They're learning the basic rules, and after a few lead-up games, like "no rules volleyball" (which actually has a lot of rules!), they'll start playing real games.

1st/2nd graders will be starting their rhythmic movement unit this week. They'll be learning fun dances, traditional folk dances, a country-western line dance, and, of course, the electric slide! Boogie oogie oogie!

Art with Dara

7th/8th grade artists created advertisements for products and services that they made up. Then students presented their products and ad campaigns.

After discussing vanishing points and how to make drawings look more realistic, 5th and 6th grade artists used rulers to create interior scenes using one-point perspective.
