The Music of Morocco

What do you know about Moroccan music?

Morocco is home to Andalusian classical music, which is found throughout North Africa. Instruments including oud (lute), rabab (fiddle), darbouka (goblet drums), taarija (tambourine), qanĂșn (zither), and kamenjah (violin) are used in Andalusian music. These orchestras are spread across the country, including the cities of Fez, Tetouan, Chaouen, Tangier, Meknes, Rabat, and Casablanca.

Another form of music that originated in Morocco is Malhun , meaning "the melodic poem."  It is a kind of urban, sung  poetry  that comes from the exclusively masculine working-class milieu of craftsmen's guilds.

Today Morocco's music scene includes Rai (rock music), rap, reggae, and various types of folk music. There is also Chaabi music, which  refers to the  combining of rural and urban folk music.

Why not get in the spirit of Midnight in Marrakech by listening to Morocco Chaabi Music?
