On February 3, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization Dr. Lassina Zerbo visited CNS's
Monterey
offices to meet with staff and students in the Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies Master's program.
Dr. Zerbo also took part in a seminar for CTBTO Youth Group members moderated by
CNS Director Dr. William Potter.

The workshop featured
a tour of a c
ancer treatment facility at Korle Bu Hospital,
table top exercises,
and
various presentations on nuclear and radiological material security, including lectures by Elena Sokova, Miles Pomper, Dr. Ferenc Dalnoki-Veress, Dr. Daniel Salisbury and Margarita Kalinina-Pohl of CNS
. At the end of the workshop, experts produced recommendations for future efforts to improve African nuclear security.

50th Anniversary of the Tlatelolco Treaty

CNS Founding Director
Dr. William Potter and Research Associate Sarah Bidgood traveled to Mexico City to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Tlatelolco Treaty on February 14. This treaty, signed in 1967, established a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Latin America and the Caribbean
.
The Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) hosted a seminar that included panels and debate sessions. Following the event in Mexico City, CNS hosted
Ambassador Joel Hernandez, Director General for the UN System at the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, in Monterey.

Remembering Lawrence Scheinmann

CNS deeply mourns the passing of our colleague Dr. Lawrence Scheinman. A co-director of the CNS Washington, DC, office at the time of its creation, Dr. Scheinmann later held the title of Distinguished Professor until his retirement from CNS in 2012. Over the course of his outstanding career, he helped shape both the field of nonproliferation studies and US nonproliferation policy. He will be sincerely missed by his many friends and colleagues in the United States and abroad.
