Interim Rectors Reflection
Dear Friends,
I know that as I take leave this Sunday that I am leaving The Church of the Epiphany in good hands and with a reasonable expectation of a vibrant future. The Rev'd Dr. Catriona Laing will, by vestry resolution, be in charge and working with The Rev'd Tricia Lyons to make sure that the parish is cared for in the remaining weeks before the call and arrival of your next Rector.
Some of the candidates have taken up the invitation of the calling committee to be in touch with me and I have generally shared with them my belief that thinking about our real estate as an endowment is one way to that vibrant future. The development of the property behind the church can move us, once again, to a place where buildings are serving ministry rather than competing for scarce resources. The development of the property over which we exercise stewardship will, of course, raise questions of use and therefore ministry. If you pursue this possibility then you will, with your rector, be engaged in exciting and attractive work that could also be an engine for attracting others to this wonderful community of faith.
I will continue to pray for you and will follow your progress as a parish of vital ministry in the Diocese and City. Thank you again for granting me the treat privilege of being with you in this season.

A Pilgrimage for Art Lovers
March 1 - April 16
Beginning March 1, you are all invited to immerse yourselves in
a new expression
of the Stations of the Cross this Lenten season.
"Stations of the Cross" is
a combination pilgrimage and art exhibition that uses monuments, old master paintings, and newly commissioned art installations to tell the story of the Passion in a new way. Stops on the pilgrimage include the National Gallery of Art , the Vietnam Women's Memory, Washington National Cathedral and The Church of the Epiphany.
Visitors can follow the stations by downloading the smartphone app, "Alight: Art & Sacred." The app offers a guided tour and includes podcasts from clergy, artists and scholars, along with maps leading to each of the stations.
In addition to the exhibition, there are a number of opening events and we would love to see you at any of the following:

Ashes to Go will be offered at the Metro Center metro stop from 7:30am - 9:30am (13th & Gst exit, beside Peet's Coffee).
Ash Wednesday Eucharist will be held at our 12:10pm service.

 Fat Sunday Celebration
All are invited to join us for a Mardis Gras celebration on Sunday,
February 26 after the 11:00 service.
We'll celebrate with Louisiana favorites, NOLA music and Mardi Gras decorations. Laissez les bon temps roulez!
We are looking for 4-5 cooks to bring your favorite Mardis Gras dish for all to share. For questions or to join in the planning, please contact Bea Trapasso Dermer at

 Coffee Hour
A big welcome to our new group of coffee hour volunteers: Vivian Dandridge-Charles,
Tonda Rush, Jennifer Walsh, and Susan Weinbeck. Each one will coordinate one
Sunday's hospitality, but they can't do it alone. We'll need help with setting up and cleaning up. We appreciate contributions of food and drink, especially if it's table-ready.
While Pat Pickering "retired" last year, she and John McDermott have done yeoman's duty in the interim setting the stage for our after worship hospitality. Many, many thanks and huzzahs for their faithful service!
 Rise up for Standing Rock
The Executive Council of The Episcopal Church calls Episcopalians to join the Rise Up for Standing Rock

on Washington on March 10 to support the Sioux nation in protesting the location of the Dakota Access Pipeline(DAP).

 Sam Wells & the St. Marin's Voices

As part of the Stations of the Cross exhibition,
we are delighted to be welcoming the Revd Dr Sam Wells and the choir of St. Martin in the Fields, London
.
Sam Wells is the author of a number of books about Christian ethics, and his most recent work, A Nazareth Manifesto reflects on the Christian vocation to serve the poor.
Wells and the
St. Martin's Voices
will explore in word and song what the shape of Jesus' life means for theology and ethics, ministry and mission.
St. Martin in the Fields is a large church in central London, whose ministry is in many ways similar to that of Church of the Epiphany. They too are a downtown congregation in a powerful capital city who seek to serve the poor and marginalized. And like us, they enjoy a rich musical tradition with regular public concerts. This promises to be a fascinating evening where we as a congregation will be able to hear how a church similar to ours understands its ministry and mission. Please make every effort to come along - see it as part of your Lenten commitment.
In addition to hoping that you will come to the event, we are looking for accommodation for the nine singers. If you are able to provide a bed for the night of March 13

 Got Miles? Bring Smiles
The Calling Committee is currently busy scheduling visits to rector candidates in the current phase of the search process. After the Calling Committee delivers 2-4 names to the vestry, the vestry will then bring candidates in for the final interview. In both cases, train or plane miles could be helpful to reduce the parish expenses for this part of the process. Do you have extra train or plane miles you might like to donate? Service in Mission & Ministry

How might you become more involved in the mission and ministry of our parish? There is so much going on at Epiphany and we are so grateful for the contributions you all offer towards making this happen. There are a few areas where we could really use your help! Please have a look at the list below and think where you might feel you could benefit from and contribute to the life of our community.
Sundays:
The Welcome Table team are looking for more volunteers to help in the kitchen and dining room. Please contact Maria Hunter if you are interested in getting involved in this important aspect of our ministry at Epiphany (

Coffee Hour after the 11am service. Pat Pickering and John McDermott do a fantastic job, but they can't do it every week. Coffee Hour can be as simple or as elaborate as we want to make it. What's important is that we have a time of fellowship after worship. Please contact Catriona if you can help (

Liturgical Leaders: We are always looking for people to help with the important ministries that make our Sunday worship possible. We welcome new additions to the ranks of greeters, ushers, readers, lay Eucharistic ministers, as well as the flower guild, and altar guild. If you are interested in learning more about any of these roles, please contact Catriona (

Weekdays:
Office Volunteers: We are looking for volunteers to sit at the front desk between 10am-2pm on weekdays. Bertha does a great job on Tuesdays and we're looking for others to help throughout the week. If you want to find out more, talk to Bertha and please contact Catherine in the office if you can help (

Music Library: Epiphany's music director would appreciate a volunteer to help with organizing the music library, including alphabetizing, rearranging shelves, labeling boxes, and updating the music library spreadsheet. Please email Jeremy at

If you or someone you know is in need of prayer or conversation, please contact the church office. We would rather hear from many than miss the opportunity to connect with someone.
Wednesday Silent Prayer
Come and join us for 20 minutes of silent prayer and meditation followed by a short time of prayer for the parish. We will meet in the sanctuary on Wednesdays at 11:30am. All are welcome. To find out more, contact Catriona: [email protected].
