It could be a book, the story of the first year with Ringo, our big handsome dog. He was a rescue from the Berkeley Humane. Having a new dog is a lot like having a baby. Things change and almost always it's for the better. Dog ownership gives you this great big responsibility and gift. In the process of observing these benefits, I decided to volunteer at the Berkeley Humane.

The volunteer training was arduous and worth it. My early Monday morning shift includes the sights and sounds of puppies, kittens, cats and dogs. It's hard work volunteering, but it's enjoyable. I see other volunteers of all ages enjoying their shifts week after week. It's bonding the work of volunteering. A grand-mother talking to a teenager, both sharing their love of animals.

A lot has been written about the benefits of volunteering and pet ownership, which overlap in amazing ways. Did you know they both share many benefits including these five?

1. Sense of purpose and routine
2. Lower blood pressure
3. Stress & depression relief
4. Exercise
5. Community connection

I've seen people of all ages volunteer in some purposeful way. One year into owning a dog, it amazes me how much more I have connected with neighbors during dog walks.

Mindful Transitions works with individuals, seniors, and families during downsizing and home moves. Moving is listed in the top 3 of life's most stressful events.
