Jamie loves spending time with his grandparents. When he gets to visit, they always take part in the programs at member agency Area 10 Agency on Aging, where they can play fun games or learn to cook something new. Jamie's grandparents have trouble driving, and a donation of $3 a week can provide 50 round trips to go to doctor appointments, get groceries, and run errands. Jamie's grandparents are lucky. They are able to remain independent in their home after having the right modifications made by Area 10. Your donation of $13 a week provides a low-income senior household, like Jamie's grandparents, with a volunteer-built ramp to help them to stay safe in their home.
With flu season hitting its peak, catching a virus on the playground would take Jamie out of school and one of his parents out of work for a few days. Missing school and losing wages to care for a sick child is hard on every family. The flu could hit a senior citizen even harder. Preventive measures are a must, but even with the passage of the Affordable Care Act, hundreds of local low income families have difficulty accessing health care coverage. Member agencies like Volunteers in Medicine and Planned Parenthood help local families by making needed health services accessible. Your donation of $5 per week provides flu shots to 26 high-risk, low income patients.

Dial 2-1-1 to Get Connected
Need help or know someone who does? Dial 2-1-1 to find assistance with needs like food, housing, employment, child care, health care, counseling, and senior services. Speak with a call specialist anytime day or night -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also visit the complete 2-1-1 database online at any time.
Last year, 3,124 Monroe, Owen, and Greene county residents who needed help dialed 2-1-1. Call specialists made 7,294 referrals to community resources. But not all needs are met. In fact, 9% of callers needed help that was not available, mainly due to lack of programs or because existing programs were already full. Your donation can help ensure we have the programs available that people need when they need them.
This confidential service continues to help thousands of local community members alleviate crises by connecting them to the right resources.
United Way of Monroe County is a nonprofit organization that improves people's lives by addressing critical needs today and working to reduce those needs tomorrow. Through our Community Action Fund, Priority Funds, and grant initiatives, we work with 25 member agencies and other community partners to focus resources on the building blocks for a better life: education, earnings, and the essentials.
