Ask The Rabbi
Question: When are we not allowed to get married?

Answer: We are not allowed to get married on Shabbat and on holidays, though Hanukkah and Purim are okay. In addition, there are two periods during the year when weddings are forbidden: 1) From the beginning of Pesach until at least Lag b'Omer (33rd day of counting of Omer) although Orthodox Jews wait until Shavuot (49 days from 1st day of Pesach). This period has a very sad history related to the Bar Kochba revolt against the Roman Empire.
2) The three weeks between 17th of Tammuz and 9th of Av which is the mourning period for the destruction of Jerusalem and the two Temples. The walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans on the 17th day of Tammuz.

This is a Weekly Column in which Rabbi Feldman will answer any question you might have relating to Judaism.  Please email your questions to office@bethelwpb.com

The Transformation of Early Modern Jewry in Eastern Europe

Jews began migrating to Poland in the 14th and 15th centuries. We will remember that by 1500 Jews had been expelled from all of Western Europe. They were invited by the Polish king and nobility to develop an economy in what was a frontier land. Like the camerai servi to the Western European nobility, they were protected by their aristocratic patrons who themselves spent little time in Poland preferring the grand courts of the western kingdoms to their cold, barren homeland.

Thus there were few economic restrictions for the Jewish arrivals. They represented the nobility in such roles as leasing land, taxing farms, trading and manufacturing. Unique in the history of the Jewish experience in Europe was the opportunity to establish their own autonomous governments throughout a vast territory that became the largest Jewish community in the world ultimately numbering in the millions.

All are welcome to join the discussion and video on Tuesday, February 28, 10:30am sharp in Senter Hall.

Facilitator: Faith Krasnow

Sisterhood Mitzvah Month

Sisterhood Mitzvah Month

March is the annual Sisterhood Mitzvah Month. We are collecting donations for the clients of The Lord's Place.  We share their mission of "breaking the cycle of homelessness by providing them with the tools to become productive, self- sufficient members of the community."
The Lord's Place is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization that helps their clients through innovative programs of rehabilitation and education.
As a Sisterhood, we of Temple Beth El reach out into the larger community by partnering with The Lord's Place to make a difference, Tikun Olum.
Do your spring cleaning NOW.
Starting March 1,  bring gently used men's, women's and children's clothes to the Temple lobby. Toilettries, linens, housewares, pens, paper, non-perishables, baby diapers and furniture (if bigger than you can carry, we'll arrange for it to be picked up) will be greatly appreciated by their clients.

Please contact Marilyn Saffer at marilynsaffer@gmail.com or 561-683-4931.  Upon request, receipts will be provided.

Mazel Tov to our Febrary Congregant of the Month!

    Ivy Faske

Ivy Faske is proud of her Temple Beth El membership, and her family's early Florida and
Southern heritage.
Her mother's family immigrated to Tampa in the late 1800' s, and her maternal grandparents moved to Miami in 1910 (before there was a minyan) and were founding members of Beth David in Miami. Her uncle was the second Bar Mitzvah in Dade County-beaten out only by his cousin who was just a bit older. To better understand how tiny the Jewish population was at the time, Dade County consisted of the area that we now know as Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Her cousins were also early Jewish settlers in Savannah, Key West, Jacksonville, and West Palm Beach. In fact, her cousins attended services in the historic building, now known as the Yeckes Chapel, that was recently moved
to our campus,.

Ivy and her husband, Jack Mayer, live in Palm Beach Gardens with their beloved dogs Willow and Gryffindog and their cat Eartha Kitten. She is happy to serve on the Board, and is currently also co-president of Sisterhood. She especially looks forward to using her assigned congregant-of-the-month parking spot many times in February for all the wonderful activities going on at Beth El.
