We are grateful to
Pastor R.C.

Tabernacle of Praise International Ministries in Seaford for leading the blessings with passages from the Book of Deuteronomy, ceremonially marking the homes ' sites with drops of oil,
and prayer. These families will soon join volunteers in the

construction of their homes.
Also, Sussex Habitat is happy to welcome
De'Andria
and her three children as a new partner family. Dee signed the contract surrounded by her children and members of the Sussex Habitat
staff. Their applause at the conclusion of the signing joyfully
highlighted the beginning of Dee's new journey to
homeownership.

As with all of our partner families, Dee will participate in the pre and post-homeownership classes that include financial counseling and she will fulfill 200 hours of sweat equity building her home and those of other partner families. We enthusiastically welcome Dee and her children to our Habitat family.

THE 2017 COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE BRINGS STUDENTS AND OTHERS TO HABITAT SITES

Middlebury College Students

Nine students from Vermont's
Middlebury College composed the third group to accept the 2017 Sussex Habitat Collegiate Challenge which will bring 21 student teams to Sussex County this winter and spring. Middlebury College, known for attracting students from around the world, didn't disappoint. These focused and energetic volunteers, who worked on a new Habitat home in Delmar, hailed from Georgia, California, Texas, Illinois, Vermont, Jamaica, and China.
"We started this week with little or no construction experience," reported
Emily Romero Rodriquez from California. "But with Habitat leadership, we built a handicapped access deck! Then, we stood and jumped on it when we finished."
The Middlebury College students stayed at
St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Laurel that generously hosts the Collegiate Challenge groups each year. That meant they sampled
Mrs. Cheryl Martin's Wednesday night dinner which has become a well-known tradition among college groups who travel to Sussex County to volunteer on construction sites.

As other groups often do, the Middlebury students scheduled a half day of construction giving them time to tour the area, visit the beach, and stop by Sussex Habitat's offices in Georgetown. Senior
Kaeng Takahashi from Vermont said, "We wanted to see the other side of the operation and understand more about who we were building for." Construction Manager
Jeff Niethammer gave them a personal tour, introduced each member of the Habitat staff, and explained their responsibilities.
The 2017 Collegiate Challenge also attracted a volunteer team of graduate students from the
University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment for a one-day build experience in Ellendale. Based at the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, these graduate students wanted to give back in a special way to the region in which they are studying. Working on a new Habitat home, the students installed exterior siding. The University of Delaware volunteers were joined on the Ellendale construction site by volunteers from the
Midway Assembly of God. Working on neighboring homes, the two groups engaged in a friendly competition to see who could hang more siding. The winners were future Habitat homeowners.
We thank Middlebury College, University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, and Midway Assembly of God for sending such wonderful volunteers.
