March 1, 2017

Brothers & Sisters,

Over the next few months you will begin to see more information posted on our CAL FIRE IN CRISIS Facebook page.  This page was born out of our wage crisis and became an excellent educational vehicle for the public and our members.

Going forward our CRISIS page will focus on critical issues that our members face daily.  You will see posts regarding:

  • Firefighters and Cancer:
    • Working with IAFF and CPF, we will share some articles and updates regarding firefighters and cancer.
    • We will share Dr. Matt Rahn's research from our long standing partnership with San Marcos.
  •  PTS:
    • Working with IAFF & CPF we will be sending more information and tools to help our firefighters deal with PTSD and mental health issues.
  •  Right To Work Issues:
    • What a Right to Work state actually means to our members.
    • How we can fight to maintain Labor Unions so our healthcare, pensions and wages are safe.
  •  Political updates and what that means for our Union:
    • News that affects the Unions ability to represent their members.

Stay informed, stay safe and keep your family close.

Fraternally,

Mike Lopez

CAUSE OF MOST US WILDFIRES TRACED TO HUMAN ACTIVITY, STUDY FINDS
FOX 40 NEWS, 2/27/2017

A new study blames people for triggering five out of every six wildfires in the United States and tripling the length of the wildfire season.

Even as climate change worsens the nation's fire season - making it longer and easier to burn more acres - researchers say human activities play an even bigger role.

Scientists looking at fire data from 1992 to 2012 found that 84 percent of all U.S. wildfires were started by people, either by accident or on purpose. Human-caused blazes only burned 44 percent of the total acres.   READ MORE

FIREFIGHTERS AT RISK OF CANCER RELY ON
CANINES WITH NOSE FOR CARCINOMA
CBS SF BAY AREA, 2/24/2017

Beyond the danger of flames and collapsing structures is a hidden reality of life in the fire service - cancer.

A study from the Center for Disease Control says 68 percent of firefighters will develop cancer at some point, compared to 22 percent of the general population.

"Unfortunately, for us, we've had quite a few guys in our organization who've come down with different cancers - ranging from multiple myeloma to bladder cancer to cancer on kidneys, a lot of prostate cancer, a lot of skin cancer," Modesto firefighter Jeremy Eldredge told KPIX 5.  READ MORE
