On February 7, 2017, I had the opportunity to attend the annual Economic Outlook Conference for Kentucky presented by the Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky. The first lecture was a
National Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy
by Dr. Mark Schwitzer Senior Vice-president at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Dr. Christopher Bollinger of the Gatton College drew a contrast between national and local relationships on the Kentucky economic outlook for 2017. Dr. Ana Herrera gave an excellent economic analysis of the effects of oil price shocks on the Kentucky economy. In Memoriam: David B. Stevens, M.D.

David B. Stevens, M.D., a 1955 graduate of Northwestern University Medical School, served his internship and residency at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. After completing his residency in 1960, Dr. Stevens joined the private practice of orthopaedics with William K. Massie, M.D. With Dr. Massie's death, Dr. Stevens continued the practice as a solo practitioner. From 1977 to 1980, he was associated with Drs. G. J. Sweeney and LeRoy Shouse, and in 1980 he became a full-time faculty member of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and chief of staff at Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Annual KET Telefund
It's not too late to sign up!!

The Lexington Medical Society will man the phones at the KET Telefund on Tuesday, March 14th from 6:00pm to 11:00pm. Dinner will be served at 6pm followed by a short training session. Members, spouses, and medical staff are invited to participate in this fund-raising effort for KET. You do not have to volunteer for the entire time.

Ky Physicians Encourage Patients to "Know Your Meds"

Tremendous advancements in science and medicine have revolutionized the treatment of conditions and diseases that were once unmanageable. Prescription medicines have become an essential lifeline for many Kentuckians, helping them to better treat their pain, seizures, mental illnesses and other serious ailments.
When patients adhere to the treatments prescribed by physicians, their health outcomes and quality of life can often be improved. But the dangers of misuse and abuse are always present, particularly when dealing with powerful opioids to manage pain.

We had a great turnout for our Legislative Update program including members, spouses and others interested in the future of medicine in Kentucky. Special thanks to Diana Moore, Holly Hadley, Cheryl Broster and Patty Pellegrini for their assistance in the planning and logistics for this special event. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Ralph Alvarado and Kim Moser serving in the State Legislature.

Salvation Army Clinic Needs Volunteers
|
The University of Kentucky Salvation Army Clinic was founded in 1986 by Dr. Abner Golden and Dar. David Cowen as a partnership between the UK College of Medicine and Salvation Army of Central Kentucky. It began in a temporarily walled-off corner of the dining room at the Salvation Army and soon moved to a converted storage closet. Today, the clinic occupies approximately 500 square feet with three curtained exam rooms, a basic onsite laboratory, and pharmacy.
