Grants/Scholarships for Non-Profit Organizations:

To encourage participation by  North Carolina non-profit organizations serving disadvantaged families with young children, the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas will award grants to selected non-profit organizations to cover half ($450) of the cost of tuition for up to two staff members or volunteers from each organization.   Grant applications must be received by March 3, 2017 (deadline extended from Feb 24th). Contact Kerry Waite with questions about scholarships:  [email protected]

Participants in this 4-day training program are professionals (in mental health, pediatrics, early childhood education, and pastoral care) who work with families. Kent Hoffman, Co-originator of the Circle of Security®, will train participants to use the Circle of Security®Parenting™ DVD, manual and handouts to lead an 8-week parent education group in the community. This program gives participants the practical tools to demonstrate and transmit the heart of attachment theory to caregivers, in groups and in individual counseling.

Connecting Attachment Theory To Practical Application
Circle of Security® Parenting™ is rooted in psychoanalytic theory, decades of attachment research, and current affective neuroscience.  Circle of Security® Parenting™ has forged the missing links between attachment theory and practical application with caregivers.

Participants Learn a Unique Approach To Help Parents
  • Understand the basic principles of attachment.
  • Recognize and sensitively respond to their children's needs.
  • Identify their strengths and weaknesses in supporting both connection and exploration.
  • Increase self-reflection and self-compassion.
  • Build capacities for being "Bigger, Stronger, Wiser, and Kind."
Who Should Attend?
Social workers, pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, early childhood educators, pastoral and lay ministers, school counselors, nurses, infant mental health specialists, public health workers, home visitors, family life educators, and anyone providing parenting education or counseling to parents of young children. 
 
Where Can Circle Of Security Parenting Be Offered In The Community?
Participants in this training can use Circle of Security® Parenting™ with individuals and in groups, in agencies or private practice, and in a variety of community settings, such as preschools, primary schools, faith-based organizations, adoption agencies, pediatric or OB/gyn offices, La Leche League, mental health clinics, substance abuse programs, departments of social services, public health clinics, community health centers, family medicine practices, and prisons.
 
Who Is The Target Client Population?
Although Circle of Security® Parenting™ materials are targeted for use with caregivers of children, five years and under, participants will learn attachment concepts and reflective skills applicable to people at all stages of life.
 
What Do Participants Gain From The Training?
  • A new set of attachment-based ideas, skills and tools for working with parents.
  • Participants who complete the four-day training are granted a license, with no future fees, to use the Circle of Security® Parenting™ DVD and manual to work with parents individually and in small groups.
  • Participants can choose to have Circle of Security® Parenting™ materials in English, Spanish, Italian or Japanese.
What Is The Cost?
The cost of early-bird register by March 26, 2017 is $900; The cost with late registration is $1,000.
For groups of 5-9 people, 10% discount.
For groups of 10 or more, 15% discount.
Members of the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas are eligible for a 15% discount with a Host Group Code.

Are Continuing Education Credits Available?
The Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas designates this program to be eligible for up to 24 CE hours for Licensed Professional Counselors and up to 9 Category A CE units for psychologists. Physicians are eligible to receive up to 24 Category 1 credits. Letters of attendance will be provided to all other attendees. See below for details. Instruction will be given at an introductory to intermediate level.
Learning Objectives
Based on the content of this training program, learners will be able to:
  1. Describe attachment theory and research upon which the Circle of Security® Parenting™ program is based.
  2. Explain the long-term benefits of shifting caregiver focus from behavior management to enhancing the quality of relationship.
  3. Describe specific steps to building self-reflection in caregivers.
  4. Utilize group process and video clips of parent-child interactions to support increased empathy in caregivers.
  5. Identify new strategies to use with caregivers to improve the regulation of emotions in themselves and their children.
  6. Employ step-by-step approaches for promoting secure attachment in children.
  7. Utilize reflective questioning to help caregivers compassionately examine their limitations as parents.
  8. Explain the concept of relational rupture and repair.
  9. Describe typical patterns of relational rupture whereby caregivers lose their capacity to be bigger, stronger, wiser and kind.

Continuing Education Credit Information  
All participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Social workers may use this certificate to document up to 24 CE hours in all states of the US, excepting California, Michigan, and West Virginia.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association and Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas. The American Psychoanalytic Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
 
The American Psychoanalytic Association designates this Live Activity for a maximum of 24 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
