Application Period Extended to March 15


The Port of Oakland's 2017 Summer College Internship Program application period is extended to Wednesday, March 15, 2017. We are inviting talented, highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students to apply. 

The program offers the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and insight into Aviation, Communications, Engineering, Environmental Programs and Planning, Finance, Governmental Affairs, Human Resources, Legal, Maritime Business Development, and Social Responsibility careers, to name a few.

Since 1994, the Port of Oakland Employees' Scholarship Program has awarded 374 scholarships totaling $850,000. Port employees raise funds through an annual golf tournament and employee contributions made during the Port's annual Giving Campaign. Scholarships are administered through the Marcus Foster Education Institute.

Port of Oakland, in partnership with the San Francisco based Blue & Gold Fleet, will run 12 complimentary harbor tour cruises from May through October 2017. The 90-minute tours will be held on Fridays beginning at  6:15 p.m. and depart from Jack London Square's ferry dock at the foot of Clay Street. The first harbor tour is set for May 12. The Port of Oakland, in partnership with California for Agriculture in the Classroom, created the Ag TransPORTation Ag-bite, a free one-page lesson plan for students in grades 5-8 to  learn about agricultural commodities that are shipped around the world. Through a shipping contest, students build a scale model of a cargo container, load it with agriculture commodities, and place it on an aluminum ship. The lesson plan meets California Standards in math and Next Generation Science Standards. 

Port History
Thomas L. Berkley 

Thomas L. Berkeley became the first African-American Board Commissioner of the Port of Oakland in 1971. He served two terms in the 1970s and was its president -- playing a key role in converting the Port to a container operation that moved more cargo with cranes. 

Charles W. Foster 

Charles W. Foster joined the Port in 1986 as director of aviation and  became the first African-American Executive Director of the  Port of Oakland  in 1995. He promoted coalition-building with community and labor groups while striving to keep the Port competitive.

Port of Oakland Celebrates 90 Years 





On Feb. 12, 1927, five civic leaders were sworn in under a city charter amendment to govern Oakland's port. They formed the first Board of Port Commissioners, and the Port of Oakland was born. On Feb. 12, 2017, the Port celebrated  90 years!

Here are just some of the Port of Oakland highlights of the past 90 years:
  • We pioneered Transpacific air travel.
  • We welcomed Amelia Earhart.
  • We supplied the troops in World II, Korea and Vietnam.
  • We brought container shipping to the West Coast.
  • We berthed the largest container ship ever to call at a U.S. port.
