Sad Little Plant Sale
Conifers at the Nursery
Upcoming & Ongoing

Helping you to realize your garden visions for over a decade.

Dear Friends,

Wow! It is September already and very soon the Japanese maples will be putting on their spectacular colors - yellows, and reds, and oranges, and purples - as the nights get cooler. Speaking of yellow, the yellow school buses are making their rounds and we have been making the rounds of the nursery as well.

We have been taking inventory, regrading, repotting, and reordering, pulling plants to ready for fall shipping, and finding some good things to put in our annual Sad Little Plant Sale that starts on Wednesday September 10 and runs through Wednesday September 17. More information on this in the next section.

We are also excited to welcome the Northeast Region Annual Meeting of the American Conifer Society to Rochester this year on September 19-21. It has been 10 years since the last meeting in Rochester and this year's meeting promises to be excellent with tours of four different gardens in addition to the Highland Park Arboretum. Over 600 conifer cultivars including dozens of unusual ginkgos will be showcased in the gardens to be visited. The ACS will transform the Flower City into Conifer City! More details and a special offer below in the Upcoming and Ongoing Section!

Sad Little Plant Sale

Yes, this is the one you have been waiting for all year and this time we are also featuring some Very Happy Perennials! And it's not just a one-day wonder, but a full week of great deals!

SLPS sign

If you are not familiar with the SLPS, we search the nursery for all kinds of plants that need a loving home. We will be pulling items from all over the nursery, both big and small, and pricing them to sell. You can get some great deals on plants that might need just a little loving care or are the last ones of that particular variety hanging out here at the nursery. We get to clear the mats before winter comes and you get to take home some wonderful plants to nurse back to their full glory.

And what are Very Happy Perennials you ask? Well, these are mighty awesome plants, just itching to spread their roots in your garden. We are choosing some first quality selections that we happen to be overstocked on right now. We have so many that we have both a sun-loving perennial house and a shade-loving perennial house!

They will be offered at Buy 1 Get 1 Free and we will add new selections to this designated grouping every day! In addition, all of the rest of the perennial crop will be on sale as well at $2.00 off each for 10 or more assorted non-sale perennials. Time to add that new bed! Help us make room for our fall crops by picking up some new treasures for your landscape!

We still have a lot of plants around here that really want to be planted out, so we encourage you to come out and see what you can find for that empty spot (or spots) in your landscape!

Fall Plant Notes

Fall is a wonderful time of year, not only for us, but for the plants too. It is an ideal time to be installing all kinds of plants particularly perennials, and deciduous and evergreen shrubs and trees. Why? The soil is still warm which encourages good root growth and the roots will continue to grow until the ground freezes. These new roots will get the plant off to a quick start in the spring, faster than plants planted in the cool spring soils.

A warning for those who want to move some trees and shrubs around their yard: there are some that do not transplant (or dig) well in the fall, although they do fine if transplanted from containers such as we have at the nursery. Also, the later in the season that perennials are divided and moved, the less time they will have to put down roots, and frost upheaval can be severe and damaging. Be sure to mulch these new transplants well.

Be sure to keep watering all plantings (in particular, those planted this year) until the ground freezes, or assure that your plants are getting enough moisture to survive the drying winter winds. Fall drought, even after the leaves have dropped, can damage a plant, even well-established plantings. Needled evergreens and broadleaf types like rhododendron are particularly vulnerable to desiccation and winterburn. If you have any questions, be sure to ask us!

Conifers at the Nursery

We have a lot of new and interesting conifers at the nursery, particularly dwarf conifers.

Among these new conifers, we were lucky enough to receive a number of cultivars from the late Dennis Dodge's collection at Bethlehem Nursery in Connecticut to care for in advance of the ACS-NER meeting. Dodge was a world-renowned propagator and grafter of rare dwarf conifers, and particularly Sciadopitys verticillata.

Some of the other new plants at the nursery include this Cupressus vietnamensis (Golden Vietnamese Cypress), a naturally rare and critically endangered species in Vietnam. New cultivation and propagation techniques have enabled its long term survival.

Also new, Picea orientalis 'Firefly', a very cute, slow growing, dwarf version of the Skylands spruce with stunning, bright yellow foliage.

Come over to the nursery and check them all out!
