A Special Message
From the President and Rabbi
of The Birmingham Temple
Congregation for Humanistic Judaism

Dear Birmingham Temple Members,

Last evening our Board voted unanimously to support the following resolution:

As people of conscience, we pledge to resist policy proposals to target and deport millions of undocumented immigrants or discriminate against marginalized communities. In this spirit, the Birmingham Temple Congregation for Humanistic Judaism hereby resolves that our community is committed to providing sanctuary and/or support for those seeking refuge in a manner consistent with our Humanistic commitments to ensuring the dignity and human rights of all people. Provision of actual sanctuary space will be subject to the advice of counsel and the approval of the Board.

With this resolution we declare our congregation's willingness to shelter or otherwise provide assistance to our immigrant neighbors in danger of deportation. Should the need arise, legal experts in the field of immigration law stand ready to provide us with advice and guidance.

This show of resolve is just one of the steps we are taking to aid those who have sought refuge in America or on other shores. In the days and weeks to come, we look forward to announcing additional steps we will be taking to aid immigrants and refugees here at home and abroad.

With our Board's passage of this sanctuary resolution we have planted a flag of resistance to bigotry in all forms. It is a visible, tangible symbol of our congregation's commitment to Humanistic values and morality.

Our philosophy teaches that our light, hope, and strength are located within ourselves and each other. It is at moments like this that we demonstrate the truth and power behind these words.

Very Sincerely,

Charles Paul
President
