Chinese New Year at school
La fête du Nouvel An Chinois à l'école

This year again, the Chinese New Year celebration was a big success.
The Preschool students created a large variety of props for the parade: individual dragons, chinese hats, chinese lanterns...
To celebrate the year of the rooster, the PK1 students got to wear the Rooster hats they made themselves.
For each of our PK2 class, students created a dragon head. The head was the leader of the parade!
A traditional lion dance concluded this very lively event.

ÉDITO

As we begin the 4th period of the year, you can look forward to many motivating events that will take place in the next few weeks for your child as well as for you. I will highlight a few information that I would not like you to miss:

The jog-a-thon: thanks to the energy of all our students and the motivation of their sponsors. We have raised this year the impressive amount of $16,000 in one morning. Soon the students' delegates and the Groupe Humanitaire will allocate the funds to charity. Ms. Seidel has already ordered new sports and recess equipment. A huge "Merci" to all parents for their support!

The New Summer Camp Program and module is now ready for your viewing on our website. In cooperation with Valerie Asensio, we have redesigned the program which is reflected in the new and attractive catalog. We offer many camps that should motivate your children, including different themes each week and a large variety of activities. Starting from art to theater to outdoors sports and games. Non-SDFAS students can also benefit from the camp experience and learn French. Please forward the information to your friends!
We are also excited to inform you that we hired a new supervisor, who will bring to our school her experience during the upcoming summer camps. Her name is Meara Scanlon and she currently participates in our Theater program. Click on the link and discover the new catalog:

International Day: Some of you have already signed up to enroll their child in the program this year. Many countries will be represented by our students and they will introduce a famous hero or character found in the tradition or folk tale. The program will include music, songs and all parents will be invited. An event not to be missed! You still have a few days to let the directors know if your child can represent a country at the show!

I cannot help mention the Gala: tickets are on sale, this is the annual opportunity to enjoy our community spirit, spend the evening supporting the school in the historic setting of the Del. Bring your friends, contact the Gala team to reserve a table... See you at the Gala "In Full Sail"!

And keep reading the Écho to find out more about events to come and enjoy the next few weeks of school!

Christian Jarlov, Head of School

Chers parents,

Official Visit from Mr Bruno Eldin
Visite officielle de Mr Bruno Eldin

Pictured: Christian and Bruno.

On Friday February 17, Mr. Bruno Eldin, the new director of the French-American Schools and the French Schools in Canada visited our campus. Mr. Eldin, based in Washington, for his first year in the USA, was looking forward to paying a personal visit to the schools of the network. At SDFAS, he expressed his appreciation for our school, enjoyed a tour of the campus, met with the directors and some of our teachers, students' delegates, finally the administration and our Board Chair Jennifer Silver. He also felt lucky to be present on the day of our Chinese New Year celebration. It gave him a good insight of the international culture of our school.
"Despite a short one day visit, I can feel the very warm, inclusive and positive climate of the school and its community" commented Mr. Eldin at the end of the day.
Volcanic Eruption in PK2C
Eruption volcanique en PK2C

Pictured: Yannick, Giulia, Samir and Hunter.

To witness a live volcano eruption might have been a dream for anyone, but being able to re-create one here at school, is simply magical in the eyes of children.
Children in PK2 C were able to create a live volcano eruption and witness the effusion of the lava which slowly covered the forest and some of the houses the children had previously built on their model. At the end, the lava eventually went into the sea.
All PK2 students will do the same experiment in the next weeks.
7th grade Science Field Trip on February

Pictured: Ariana

It's a wonderful winter for 7th grade scientists to learn about the weathering and erosion process. As the rains came heavily to San Diego this year, it has given us a lot of examples to study. On Tuesday, we set out to do just that.  We collected background information and viewed the coast to cactus and California's water exhibits at the San Diego Natural History Museum.
At Sunset Cliffs Natural Preserve, the students explored the effects of weathering and erosion in an area that is very susceptible to a changing landscape. We got to see how water, wind, waves, salt, plants and animals are changing the rocks and overall form of San Diego's cliffs and beaches.  Students had the chance to observe the action from the tide pools, while also exploring the ecosystem and the effects that weathering and erosion have on the organisms. It makes for a dramatic impression, when you are standing by some areas of the cliff that are undercut by waves and heavy from rains, not to mention, with nothing to support it underneath. We then took in the view from the top of the cliffs so that the picture we would leave with would be complete and rich. Overall though the hundreds of sea hares and other events that day, when a type of sea slug we had found returned to the water, it just stole the day!
Kindergarten Field Trip to the Lux Art Institute

Both kindergarten classes went to visit the Lux Art Institute in order to see the work of an Italian artist: Siro Cugusi. Siro is a painter who made abstract drawings.
The specificity of this institute is that it invite artists around the world for several weeks. The artist can choose some of his/ her work to exhibit and can still keep working on their project at the Institute.
So we had the opportunity to see the place where Siro works and to discover a painting he was working on with the material and paints he used.
The students had a lot of imagination and were very inspired to speak about Siro's paintings. After the visit, the kindergarten became artists of their own and made beautiful paintings using their imagination and some ideas they had witnessed while watching Siro paint his own art piece.
Finally, the kindergarten classes had a stroll outside the building and enjoyed a wonderful picnic.  We saw different sculptures and realized that Art can be seen outside as well as inside.
Magnetic board in Preschool
Tableau magnétique en maternelle

Pictured: Yannick and Hunter.

Our preschoolers have been recently happily surprised when they discovered a large magnetic board in their sand-pit.
This board comes with some magnetic material: pipes, loops, ramps, open containers...
The purpose of this magnetic board is to promote open-ended exploration.
Children can explore decanting with sand, and are able to create more complex decanting using different tools and ways.
Kindergarten: Quiet corner to calm down
Grande Section de maternelle : un coin calme pour se détendre

Pictured: Kenzie.

Everybody needs some time to calm down, especially during those busy days we go  through each and every day.
Our children have a very busy schedule: they start early in the morning to get to school.  Once at school their day is organized with a full bilingual schedule. After school, they  often have ASA or enrichment activities such as music or swimming lessons. All of this, before they can go home, do their homework and finally go to bed.
Our Kindergarten teachers have decided to create a quiet corner in their class room: a  lovely teepee to calm down and take some time to either calm down or relax, using  some peaceful tools hidden in a secret box.
Any of the students can ask to go inside the teepee for a few minutes at any time.
When they come back to the activities, the stress or anxiety is gone, the child feels  calmed, secured and ready to focus again.
3 rd Annual SDFAS Film Festival in Middle School
Le 3ème festival annuel de court métrage au collège

On Thursday February 16, all middle school students worked in groups on the theme "Diversity & Inclusion". They were assigned to film a short Public Service Announcement video using I Movie on the theme. The workshop included several steps:
  • watch two videos as examples
  • reflect on the theme (short individual questionnaire)
  • share thoughts and feelings about diversity & inclusion with their team
  • organize production company/team (director, actor, spokesperson...)
  • plan story/write script
  • film and edit video using I Movie
Oscars were given this morning for Best Picture, Best Message, Most Original, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director.
Congratulations to all students for demonstrating excellent collaborative skills, and congratulations to the winners!!
