SAVANNAH, GA, FEBRUARY 3, 2016 - Live Oak Public Libraries received two S.T.E.A.M. (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) focused  grants.

The award from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association is $5,000.  The ALSC Strengthening Communities Through Libraries grant, made possible through a grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation will fund a partnership between Garden City Library and the Savannah Coastal Empire Society of Women Engineers. The partnership will offer an 8-week LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robot Dance Academy workshop to teach a class of 16 children in grades 4-8 how to build a robot and then program the robot to dance through code. The workshop will culminate in a Robot Dance Recital at the Garden City Library on May 1, at 5:30 p.m.

Interested students in grades four through eight must commit to eight educational sessions at the Garden City Library from March through May and the Robot Dance Recital.  To register or for more information, contact Maryann Brickey at [email protected]

The Marianne Glick and Mike Woods Charitable Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation, which supports the 25th Anniversary Children's Literacy Grant Award of $1,000 through TEI Landmark Audio will fund a monthly after-school S.T.E.A.M. program. The funding will be used to acquire hands-on learning components like educational robotics, electronics, circuitry, digital, learning kits, and a cart that can store and transport them for students using Islands, Thunderbolt, and Tybee Libraries.
