From The Consul General's Desk
Among my many responsibilities I have as Consul General, assisting British Nationals in distress is among the most important.
From lost passports to swearing in new citizens and responding accidents or injuries, ensuring the safety and security of our citizens is paramount. But there are times when the assistance you need goes beyond replacing a travel document. Brits abroad do get in trouble. On the extreme side, I recently had the opportunity to visit San Quentin State Penitentiary with our Consular team in order to see the conditions and meet with prison officials. We have a number of British Nationals in prison across the State - and we can help connecting them with family back home, or legal resources here in the US or in the UK. Especially with regards our wider campaign against the death penalty globally.
What's more, we work diligently to be prepared in case of a larger crisis where more British nationals are in danger. In San Francisco that could be any natural disaster from an earthquake, flood, or fire, among many other scenarios. These preparations are vital that we connect and build a relationship with first responders, which includes participating in crisis exercises (I did one at San Francisco International Airport in October and there's another coming up in April). I wish someone had told me in advance about the siren test every Tuesday, which came as rather a surprise on our first full day in San Francisco 6 months ago! Preparedness and practice are important.
We work as part of the wider US network, so we can react quickly with the US government announcements, such as the recent Executive Orders. I hope you saw the Foreign Secretary's announcement at the weekend that "we will protect the rights and freedoms of UK nationals home and abroad" and the updated FCO advice on what the EO means for British nationals.
While I am very proud of the work our Consular team does every day, I hope none of you need most of those services offered, be Travel Aware and follow Travel Advice, but in case there are instances where you do we are here. Please see how we can be of assistance abroad.

San Francisco Office Market Review - Kidder Mathews Tenant Representation Services
After years in high growth mode - rents increasing and vacancy plummeting - the San Francisco market took a long breath in 2016 with asking rents and vacancy both plateauing and not showing much movement in any direction. The spike in sublease space on the market in early 2016, which can be seen as an early warning sign for market trouble, has dropped again as the appetite for such space from growing tech firms remains strong.
See the data on asking rents, vacancy, and availability below, along with details of some recent transactions and a survey of asking rents around the City.
