Tampa Bay Times: Cross-bay bromance: Mayors tout regionalism, cooperation - yes, even on baseball

Two or three decades ago, the politics of the Tampa Bay area was parochial enough that the idea of bringing the mayors of Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater together for a lunch would not have been quite so plausible, and the discussion might have been more strained than cordial.

But Clearwater's George Cretekos, St. Petersburg's Rick Kriseman and Tampa's Bob Buckhorn have already met for working lunches of their own over the past couple of years, so it wasn't out of their comfort zone Tuesday to open their latest to 175 members of the Suncoast Tiger Bay Club.

Mayors from Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater each agreed their cities work best when issues are tackled together.

Though St. Petersburg Mayor  Rick Kriseman and Tampa Mayor  Bob Buckhorn are both jockeying to land baseball in their respective cities, both care first that the team stay within the region.

Tampa Bay Reporter: St. Pete City Hall Honors Black History Month

More than 100 people this morning (Feb. 1) attended a ceremony outside City Hall to recognize February as Black History Month, and Mayor Rick Kriseman noted in his speech that in this era of divisive rhetoric, it is also a time to embrace Muslims in the community. Several of those attending were of the Islamic faith.

Woodson Museum board president Terri Lipsey Scott also spoke, naming a number of St. Petersburg's African American leaders who have passed on but are remembered for their work in the community and as civil rights advocates. Earlier in her speech, Scott pointed out that President Donald Trump had not issued a proclamation in honor of the month. something that his predecessors have done going back to Gerald Ford.

The Kriseman administration held their annual report on the city's progress in south St. Petersburg last Sunday, Jan. 29 inside of the cafeteria at Fairmount Park Elementary School to a standing room only crowd.

This year's address was held in the Childs Park community, where Bro. John Muhammad is the president of the neighborhood association. He gave an update on what the association has done to help keep the areas 1,400 residents informed and safe.

Muhammad said the best way they combat "fake news" or "alternative facts" is by holding community forums with city officials such as the chief of police, the community intervention director, the director of education and the public works administrator, to name a few.

Creative Loafing: St. Pete Mayor takes a ride with Coast Bike Share ahead of its official launch

During a 1:06:49-hour ride over a total of 2.38 miles, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman led a small group of riders through downtown St. Petersburg, the Warehouse Arts District and the Deuces earlier this week to tout  Coast Bike Share, which opens to the public on Saturday.

Similarly to the program that launched in Tampa in 2014, the new bike share allows pedestrians to rent bicycles for a fee to get to a nearby locale, assuming it has a bike station where the rented bicycle can be secured. The idea is to offer an affordable alternative means of transportation that allows people get around the city easily without a car.
