ClearWater receives $80k from DCNR for work on riparian buffers
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources awarded almost $800,000 for 13 grants to plant trees along streams in the commonwealth. One of these grants went to ClearWater Conservancy.
State Rep. Mike Hanna's office announced the $80,000 grant on January 23.
The funding will be used for the construction of about 28 acres of buffers along waterways in Centre and northern Huntingdon Counties.
"This funding will provide sustainable income for landowners through what DCNR calls a multifunctional buffer option," Hanna said in the
release. "This is great news for our waterways and for enhancement of fish habitat in our region."
The goal of ClearWater's Riparian Conservation Program is to improve stream quality throughout Central Pennsylvania through the program's four areas of focus: stream assessment, stewardship, restoration, and protection. The program educates streamside landowners on the role of vegetated buffers, restores streamside buffers with native trees and shrubs, and permanently protects riparian areas through conservation easements.

18 Acres added to Scotia Barrens' protected area through acquisition of Smith Property
On January 6, ClearWater Conservancy finalized the purchase of 18.7 acres of property in Halfmoon Township from the Paul B. Smith Family Trust for the purpose of expanding the protected area of the Scotia Barrens. Conserving land in this area has been identified as a high priority for ClearWater Conservancy since 2005 due to the rare and ecologically significant habitat the land provides for wildlife and for source water protection. ClearWater currently owns an additional 39 acres in the Scotia Barrens which is accessible to the public, known as the
Bald Eagle to Barrens Wildlife Corridor, near Stormstown.

Jim Lanning
is
a lifelong conservationist and a long time volunteer at ClearWater Conservancy.
He is the founder and owner of the National Critical Infrastructure Key Resources Group and is a licensed private investigator in both California and Pennsylvania.
Among other community service, Jim currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited and is the Chair of the Veterans Service Program. He also serves as the Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited Northcentral Regional Vice President and member of the Trout Unlimited National Veterans Service Partnership Advisory Board.
After completing a thirty two year career in law enforcement, homeland security and emergency management in large California agencies, Jim came to Happy Valley at the request of his wife of 42 years, Denise Lanning.
Jim lives in the Greentree section of State College with Denise. His son, James Joseph, a medically retired Marine, James' wife Margarita and his two grandsons James and Joseph, live in nearby Park Forest.

Scot Chambers

As a longtime resident of the Centre Region, Scot Chambers has been a firm supporter and advocate for ClearWater Conservancy from its inception and looks forward to being a part of the Board of Directors and helping the organization move forward.
Scot currently serves on ClearWater's Land Conservation and Stewardship Committee. He and his wife Charlene, who are both Docents for The Arboretum at Penn State, have been regular members and supporters of ClearWater in a number of capacities for over many years.
After spending decades teaching for the state of Pennsylvania, as well as coaching and refereeing high school soccer, Scot became a Realtor in 2006.
Scot and Charlene live in Park Forest and are currently converting their property to be more pollinator and wildlife friendly.

Special donation made in honor of Elwood, a feline friend and "Mayor of Main Street
"
A donation to ClearWater Conservancy was recently made by Stan and Darlene Smith of Oak Hall in honor of Elwood, a special friend and cat. Elwood resided in downtown Boalsburg and was often referred to as the "Mayor of Main Street." He passed away after a happy life of twenty years, joining Jake, his fellow feline friend, in pet heaven. Elwood found Boalsburg and its people fun to meet and greet and he will be fondly remembered by his neighbors and owners, Bill, Carla, and Grace Jane.
