Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Club of America's premier recognition program for Club members. To be selected as Youth of the Year is the highest honor a youth member can receive, recognizing the outstanding contributions that the member has made to their family, school, community, and Boys & Girls Club, as well as any personal challenges and obstacles they have overcome. The Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos presented this honor to three youth members: One from our Teen Center, one from a middle school site, and one from an elementary school site. Our Teen Youth of the Year will be moving on to compete in the 2017 San Diego County Youth of the Year competition.

Evelynn is seventeen years old and a senior at San Marcos High School. She currently attends the Club's Teen Center and has been a youth member for ten years! She is involved in Keystone, our teen leadership program, and credits the Club for helping her develop leadership skills and growing out of her shell.

Evelynn's GREAT FUTURE includes attending law school and working in criminal law, as she aspires to become a district attorney some day.

"I was fascinated when I discovered that there were people who fought for those who didn't have a voice against those who spoke too loud. My purpose is to help those whose voices are silenced by society to reach those who care enough to hear... Being at the Club has taught me to stand up in what I believe in as well as stay true to who I am despite what others think."

Alehida is ten years old and has attended our after school program at San Marcos Elementary School for five years. She is president of her site's Torch Club, our leadership and service program, and attributes her love for science and the arts to being able to explore the programs at her Club site. She has already set goals for her GREAT future, one of them being to attend the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and becoming a famous artist someday.
