Grandparents' Mass & Luncheon

Tuesday was our annual Grandparents' Mass and Luncheon and we are happy to report it was well attended!  It was lovely to see so many grandparents on campus celebrating Mass with their grandchildren. Grandparents were greeted by their grandchildren with a flower then escorted to the gym for Mass.  During Mass, we took a moment to remember those grandparents who have passed away and candles were lit in their honor.  After Mass, everyone was invited back to MLH for lunch and an opportunity to take a photo.  To commemorate the occasion, the photos will be mailed out to the grandparents in a couple of weeks. Pictured are Dominic Petrini '19, Lou Petrini '56, Carol Petrini, and Dante Petrini ''19.
Parent Picnic on Campus

Thursday was Parent Appreciation Day at Garces and our campus was a hub of activity!  Every where you turned, there was a parent enjoying lunch with their student and friends.  Toward the end of lunch, we gathered the students and parents around the cross and prayed for them. We hope our parents enjoyed being here as much as we enjoyed having them!
Camp Ram

In honor of Student Appreciation Day, we held Camp Ram during lunch and let the kids compete in Camp Ram Games!  A big THANK YOU TO Garces parent Mr. Mike Strahan who ran all the games!  He brought in all the game equipment, organized each event, and kept the Ram campers engaged and enthusiastic.  It was a great hour in our gym.  The winners of the coveted Camp Ram trophy were the Senior Class and the Best Spirit Pin was won by the Sophomores.
Congratulations R.J. Senining

RJ Senining was recognized by the Kern County High School Honor Orchestra at their "It's a Grand Night for Music" concert.  He was recognized for his four years of successfully auditioning, practicing, and performing with the honor orchestra. He is an amazingly talented young man. We are so proud of him and how well he has represented our school with the honor orchestra over the past four years.

Congratulations Claire Hamilton & Kohl Humphrey

Congratulations to Kohl Humphrey and Claire Hamilton who were honored by the Bakersfield Jockey Club for being Outstanding Student Athletes at a luncheon on Monday.  Kohl was honored for Boys Soccer and Claire was honored for Girls Soccer. Way to go Rams!
Conor Bruce made the SLO Paper!

Congratulations Patrick Burke

Patrick Burke has been named an All-American Honorable Mention by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA).  Way to go Patrick!

Winter Formal - Big Success!

The Garces Winter Formal was a fabulous event!  Everyone looked amazing and the venue was perfect for the Great Gatsby theme.  The ASB class with the guidance of our Activities Director, Ms. Caitlin Witwer, did an outstanding job!  Over 300 students attended the event.  A special shout out to Mrs. Tammy Renzi and the Garces Parent Club for helping to make it a special night for the students.

Football Philosophy and Weight Lifting Opportunities
Our Football Program has no off season.  In order to compete at our level, it is required that all members of the Football Program train year round.  I have laid out this philosophy at each and every parent meeting.  Understanding that our campus has a limited amount of players, it is vital that these athletes commit to developing their bodies.  Football is a physically taxing sport and if your sons are not ready for the grind, they are extremely vulnerable to injury.  In order to keep your sons healthy and competitive; while gaining the strength, speed and explosiveness needed for all sports, it is mandatory that your sons train with the Football Program.  Our primary lifting time is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 6:00am. The boys are expected to be here warming up at 5:45am and we will be finished at 7:30am.  This gives them 30 minutes to get ready for class.  Because we view the Football Program as a family, we rely on one another for rides, communication and support.  This is the essence of what a team is all about and it is developed during this morning lifting session.  Any member of the program is required to lift 4 times a week.  Since it is extremely challenging to accommodate each student, given our block school schedule and many after school activities, it only makes sense that we come together at a time that fits everyone.  If a player chooses not to participate in morning lifts, he is still required to get the 4 days of training in.  The way the lifting program is designed, each 4-6 week block is aimed at a different result.  Example, we have a Hypertrophy Block which conditions the body to maximize muscle fibers, while strengthening connective tissue.  We then work into a Strength Block, which is designed to build our muscles to move greater amounts of weight.  Then we go into a Power Block, which is where we get our biggest gains of strength.  This is followed by a week of testing each major lift, to attain our max's.   We then measure our gains to know where we need to focus our efforts in the next cycle of lifts.  It is almost impossible for an individual to get the most benefit from lifting, if that individual is not in the team atmosphere. That is why it is not recommended to lift alone or outside the team environment. Please know your sons are being evaluated year round and the weight room is a major part of that evaluation.

Message from
Debra Sakowski
Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs

Dear Parents  -

"Spring is in the air!" ...or is it?   Yesterday was Groundhog Day and according to folklore, a groundhog's behavior can predict the weather. So, since we had a cloudy and therefore shadow less day,   Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow.  He thought Spring had Sprung and decided to stay above ground and   help our Garces family   prepare for Spring and acknowledge student achievement.

We are happy to continue our recognition of those students who qualified for the first semester honor roll by achieving a 3.5 and higher,   grade point average on their report card.   They are deserving of our praise and recognition for their hard work and dedication to meeting the demands of the academic rigor at Garces.   The majority of these students also give back to their school and community through   their participation in sports, the arts, their parishes and community service.

Also deserving of recognition are our many seniors who have been accepted into colleges and universities for Fall 2017.   They, too, have spent a great amount of time meeting deadlines for the admissions process and working diligently to maintain a strong academic record.   Just as a reminder, if your student applied to a college using the common application, they will need to request their MIDYEAR transcript be sent to these colleges, as soon as possible.   The counselors continue to be very helpful with the requirements of this application process. Please give them a call, if you have any questions.

We are looking forward to Elective Preview Day on February 15th.   This event will take place during the lunch hour and will give students a "quick look" at the upcoming elective classes for next year.   Students will be able to talk with teachers and students, currently in the classes and gain a better understanding of the expectations and requirements for each class. Our ultimate goal for this event is for students to have a better understanding of the classes they want to register for next year.

Speaking of REGISTRATION for next year, this process will take place in the English classes beginning March 6th and continue through March 15th.   Registration forms and honors contracts will be available for   students during their registration session and due back to their counselors by March 17th.   To help parents understand the Registration process and assist their students with getting forms signed and returned by the required deadline, a Registration Information Night for Parents of Current Students will be presented on March 6th, from 5:30-6:30 pm in room 72, Science building.

On a final note, I wanted to address the issue of Academic Dishonesty, cheating, at Garces.  This violation is explained in our handbook and carries a serious consequence, possible expulsion if repeated, during your student's stay at Garces.  In the past week, I became aware of a website, SLADER, which students were and are using to access textbooks with answers to school assignments. Access to this site has been blocked on our campus but is available off campus. While students don't see this as cheating, use of this site, will be addressed as Academic Dishonesty and will result in the noted consequences.  I am aware that, with the use of technology and access to the web, students will always have an avenue for cheating.  The hope of our staff and administration is that parents will continue to impress upon their students the importance of integrity and commitment to the morals and principles of their faith.
