EYE SEE YOU HOLIDAY CONTEST
Photo Contest Winner

This past holiday season, the IFA called upon Canadians to not lose sight of what matters.  Through the  Eye See You 2016 Holiday Campaign, the IFA hosted  a holiday photo contest for individuals across C anada to post on Twitter and Facebook their favourit e holiday photos.  

In just two weeks, the IFA received over
100 p hoto submissions including the photo of "Pillow the reluctant Christmas elf which was submitt ed by Sue Walker and winner of the contest.  

The IFA congratulates Sue Walker for her win and thanks all parti cipants for their entries, which aimed to raise awareness of the importance of eye health.

55th SESSION OF THE UN COMMISSION ON SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
New York 

The IFA recently participated in the 55th Session of the Commission on Social Development (CSoCD55)  at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The session is taking place from 1 to 10 February, 2017. The priority theme for the CSoCD55 is "Strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all".  

Since poverty is experienced differently by everyone, especially due to the intersectionality of various types of oppression such as ageism, racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, and ethnocentrism, the IFA has submitted a written statement highlighting the importance of analyzing the various intersecting forms of oppression while creating strategies to eradicate poverty.

The IFA  co-hosted a side-event with the Permanent Mission of Argentina to the UN  entitled Eradicating Poverty as a Human Right for Older Persons. 

During this event, o n behalf of the IFA, Virginia Duarte Walsh, Project Officer, delivered an  o ral statement providing recommendations on how to create a global environment which is capable of sustaining effective and long lasting strategies to eradicate poverty.

EYE SEE YOU 
Networking Wine and Cheese Event
 

On January 30th, 2017, the IFA hosted a Wine and Cheese Networking Event for its Eye See You Campaign.   The goal of the event was to provide a forum for people interested in the issues of ageing a nd eye health to meet one another and potentially create opportunities for work together on common issues.   

The Networking Event brought together over 50 key stakeholders includin g ophthalmologists optometrists , government officials , academics and NGOs in health and ageing  and i ndustry partners

THE IFA ADULT VACCINATION PROJECT

The IFA Adult Vaccination Project has had many developments in the early part of 2017, with two Adult Vaccination meeting reports, the  Latin American Immunization Advocacy Summit Report and the Asia-Pacific Adult Immunization Meeting Report , set to be released in the coming weeks.

The World Coalition on Adult Vaccination has also been active through online media. A Fourth Edition of the Adult Vaccination newsletter will be circulated in early February and the World Coalition on Adult Vaccination Twitter account  has been gaining momentum since early January.  

The World Coalition encourages organisations to send information to be tweeted to the Coalition network as a means of promoting adult vaccination globally.  Additionally, The World Coalition appreciates every follow and retweet!

Update on UN Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing

When we wrote the blog last month, the UN IFA Team was gearing up for the United Nation's Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OWEGA) December 12-15, 2016.   We are happy to report that a big step forward was taken at the meeting when it was decided to discuss, at its next meeting in July 2017, possible elements that could be incorporated into an international instrument to protect and promote the rights of older persons .  
Six previous sessions had addressed ageing issues  and concerns of older persons, with many panels and experts providing data, information and results from research and analysis.  NGOs felt enough evidence had been presented over the past six years and pushed for moving forward to discuss the content of a convention.

WHO AGEISM CAMPAIGN 

Findings from the World Values Survey in 2016 by the World Health Organization (WHO) reconfirmed that ageism pervades society across cultural and regional lines.   Sixty per cent of respondents beli
eved that older people are not respected.  More than 83  000 people in 57 countries took part in the survey which as sessed attitudes to older people across all age groups. 

Perceptions of older people as frail, weak, and helpless contribute to widespread social, political, economic, cultural, and civic exclusion.  Structural age discrimination prevents policymakers and service providers from responding effectively to population ageing.

The IFA along with many other NGOs and governments around the world are standing up against ageism.  Through a global multi-media campaign, the IFA aims to improve the public awareness of ageism and help to mobilised citizens globally.   

The campaign will collect firsthand stories  of ageism from participants all over the world.  By targeting diverse regions, age groups, and professions, the campaign will paint a complex portrait of the international impact of ageism.

Government of Western Australia

The Life in Pictures filmmaking competition  initiative from the Western Australia Department Local Government and Communities Government is an outstanding example of collaboration with the arts community. 

Stimulating discussion about ageing, celebrating achievements of those who are ageing and diving into cultures each who have a different perspective on what it is to age is a tremendous goal, and the International Federation on Ageing is very proud to support and endorse this innovation.

AGE-FRIENDLY INFORMATION EXCHANGE 
IFA and  World Health Organisation 

The IF A and  the World Health Organisation (WHO) have partnered together to host an A ge-friendly Information Exchange (AFIX) leading up to  th e IFA 14 th Global Conference on Ageing in 2018 as one of the sub-themes of the conference is 
A ge-Friendly  under the conference theme  Enabling Functional Ability .
 
The AFIX will offer several initiatives over the next two years, including quarterly webinars on age-friendly and related topics starting  in winter 2017.  

The AFIX will be developing newsletters , blogs s ocial media information exchanges on both LinkedIn and Facebook as well as an age-friendly Expert Centre,  used as a platform and resource for experts in age-friendly environments.
