One of downtown's most fun and culturally significant events is Saturday.
The Orange County Black History Month Parade & Faire marks its seventh year in Anaheim.
This year features a surprise Disney character as grand marshal, as well as Tuskegee Airman Alfonzo Jackson, Anaheim leaders and other celebrities and officials.
- When: Feb. 4
- Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Where: downtown Anaheim
- Groups: about 100, including marching bands, parade vehicles, horseback riders
- Cultural faire: music, food, retailers, information booths, Black History exhibit, college expo, health screenings.

If you joined with the library last month during their Big Read event of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, you're in for a treat this month.
During the month of February, the library is hosting events and activities inspired by the book.
Events will include book discussions, movie screenings and demonstrations by the Anaheim Fire & Rescue Department.

Child safety seats are so important. But, as any parent can attest, they can be confusing.
So each month, Anaheim Police hold free child safety seat inspections by appointment at the department's Main Station at 425 S. Harbor Blvd.
Four officers trained and certified in safety seats work with parents, grandparents and other caregivers to ensure seats are up to date, installed safely and are being used properly.
The monthly inspections help ensure safety for kids in vehicles.
But they are more than that. They're Anaheim's culture of kindness in action.
Anaheim Police volunteer their time to raise money to buy seats to have on hand for anyone who can't afford to buy one.

NAMM Foundation Gives Back
|
No other Orange County city is doing as much to address homelessness as Anaheim.
Since January 2014, more than 675 homeless people have been taken off our streets and parks and reunited with family or placed in housing.
The city has stepped up to host Orange County's first year-round homeless shelter and provided $500,000 in funding for the facility, set to open in mid-2017.
The Anaheim Housing Authority works with nonprofit developers to bring affordable housing communities to the city, helps people find affordable housing and offers rent vouchers.
Anaheim balances compassion for homelessness with the public safety and quality-of-life concerns.
In 2016, the Anaheim Police Department responded to more than 15,000 calls for service related to homelessness.

It's Andy's Map, named for Andy Anaheim, the city's mascot who also brings you this newsletter each month.

The music industry's biggest trade show of the year isn't just for music professionals.
It's also a time where Anaheim elementary school students get to learn from the best.
Each January, the NAMM Show opens its doors for four days at the Anaheim Convention Center in what is arguably the city's largest trade show of the year.
Attracting more than 100,000 music aficionados, the show is ripe with talent.
This year the NAMM Foundation kicked off the show with a day of service at Patrick Henry Elementary School, about a four-mile drive north of the convention center.
There, music professionals gave students lessons in guitar, ukulele, drums and movement.
While at the school, the foundation also presented a $10,000 check to the Anaheim Elementary School District to help continue music education in the district's schools.

The call displays as Anaheim Public Utilities. The caller demands you pay your bill now by prepaid credit card, or you'll have your electric or water service shut off.
Don't fall for it.
It is a utility-bill scam that is on the rise in Anaheim.
Anaheim Public Utilities will never call you asking for immediate payment.
You could get a call from us if there is an issue with your bill, but we will never solicit payment over the phone or at your door.
Only pay your bill notice by mail, in person at our office, by calling our automated phone system or securely online at Anaheim.net/utilities.
And know that Anaheim Public Utilities will never immediately shut off your service.
We will mail at least one past-due notice and one disconnection notice before shutting off
service.
If you suspect a caller is a utility-bill scammer, hang up. Then call us at (714) 765-4311.
