“The home is the first community.” Michael Fishbane
Welcoming and sharing meals with guests is considered by Jewish tradition as both an act of kindness-gomel hesed and a mitzvah-a commandment of the Torah. “Face time” is what we call spending time with people these days. In a lifestyle that rushes us fast and furious and a new political reality of divisiveness and fear mongering, we seek an alternative through revitalizing the practice of Jewish hospitality-enriching “face time and connection” with people, including new faces.
Panim Hadashot-New Faces is passionate about revitalizing Jewish hospitality through the time-honored practice of Shabbat hospitality. We join with hosts all around Seattle to create beautiful Shabbat experiences in their homes and through our signature program,
Shabbat Hosting Partnerships.
We bring to our hosting partners and their guests a unique Sabbath experience featuring participatory Jewish song and music, thought provoking conversation led by an experienced rabbi, and joyful feasting and fellowship. Our
Shabbat Hosting Partnerships
are organized to help Jews of all backgrounds enhance their practice of hospitality and to encourage the inclusion of new faces around our Shabbat table and in our private spaces.
Panim Hadashot-New Faces fashions exceptional Shabbat experiences through our
Heart of Shabbat Ensemble
, led by Rabbi Dov Gartenberg and master jazz guitarist, Ari Joshua. We delight participants through evocative music and group singing. Rabbi Gartenberg is a storyteller who brings insights from Jewish tradition to foster engaging and timely conversations.
Each
Shabbat Hosting Partnership
is fashioned in collaboration with our hosts. We can create a beautiful Shabbat experience for adults, families with children, students, and organized groups. Below are some examples of what we have organized with our
Shabbat Hosting Partners.
- Friday Evening Shabbat Tish. An evening filled with singing and beautiful music interspersed throughout the Sabbath meal.
- Friday Evening Kabbalat Shabbat Service, followed by dinner and lively conversation. A beautiful, 45-minute service helps transition hosts and guests into Shabbat and is followed by a meal and a topical group discussion facilitated by Rabbi Gartenberg.
- Saturday Evening Havdallah Hootenanny, AKA Maleveh Malkah. The word ‘hootenanny’ was coined in Seattle in the 1930s and we adapt it to the Hasidic tradition of the Melaveh Malkah, which extends the Sabbath with group singing and storytelling.
