Message from the Editor
|
In this issue of our newsletter, we are pleased to announce the theme of our meeting in San Diego May 17-20, 2017:
"Networks and Complexity in Biology, Brain and Behavior." We are in a tremendously exciting time in Biological Psychiatry. The plenary themes will focus on the new tools available to study the brain and behavior that are unparalleled in history, and yet these remarkable developments- from optogenetic approaches in neural circuits to complex genomics to digital phenotyping - bring great challenges. How do we address the enormous amount of data, the complexity and need for integrated approaches, and the need for paradigm shifts in our thinking and methodology? Fortunately, from other areas of biology, science, and social technology, new approaches to complex analysis may bring remarkable insights to our field.
The 2017 meeting theme promises to bring an unparalleled line-up of terrific plenary speakers and symposia, addressing fascinating new approaches to complexity in neural function and activity, from mice to human, and towards understanding language to social networks. While doing a deep dive into cutting-edge neuroscientific approaches, we will seek insights from Cancer Genomics and Multimodal Networks. Together, these efforts aim to generate exciting discussions and approaches to next generation discovery.
We believe the meeting themes are particularly relevant today for SOBP. Our work continues to progress into the network complexities of the brain in order to make progress toward improving the lives of our patients. By reaching out across disciplines we hope to inspire new models and thinking to resolve the complex problems of what has gone awry in bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, and PTSD and how do we prevent or repair it. As always, in addition to good plenary speakers, for this meeting to succeed, we need each of you to send your best science for symposia and orals and posters. As noted in the announcement in this newsletter, symposia proposals are due October 19, 2016, and oral and poster abstracts are due December 15, 2016, so please put this date in your calendars. We look forward to seeing each of you in San Diego.

Members Sponsorship of Abstracts
All non-members submitting an oral or poster abstract are required to have a current SOBP member sponsor their abstract.
The goal of sponsoring an abstract is to encourage non-members to join the Society - explain the benefits of being a member of the Society and of attending/presenting at the meeting. Members may sponsor as many abstracts as they would like and do not need to be involved in the research or a co-author on the abstract. Non-members may contact sobp@sobp.org to locate a member in their institution or area.

| Education Committee Update |
With enthusiastic support from the SOBP Council, the Education Committee reinstated and expanded two educational initiatives for the 2016 annual meeting; the Psychiatry Residency Training Directors' Initiative and the Early Career Investigator (ECI) Awards programming.
For the 2016 meeting, the Committee provided specialized programming for 103 outstanding ECIs, an increase from 60 ECI Awardees in 2015. Program growth reflects the inclusion of two new cohorts: the APA Research Colloquium Awardees and the Predoctoral Scholars Awardees (PDS). Awards formerly offered only to medical students were additionally made available to other predoctoral students (graduate, PhD, MD/PhD) interested in careers in biological psychiatry. At the 2016 Meeting, all ECI awardees participated in focused educational programming and obtained mentorship from SOBP members. Programming highlights for ECI Awardees included "Career Development Roundtables" where SOBP members and NIMH staff fielded questions about academic careers in psychiatry and next-stage funding and training opportunities. In lieu of the popular Lunch and Learn lectures, this year, ECIs enjoyed the opportunity to engage with NIH Program and Center staff from NIMH, NIAAA and the Center for Scientific Review (CSR). Panel members provided updates and guidance on career development award applications during a dynamic question and answer session and also met individually with attendees.
In its second year, the Psychiatry Training Director Initiative provided financial support for twenty training and/or associate training directors to attend the 2016 SOBP meeting. Programming focused on increasing awareness of the Society and integrating neuroscience education into psychiatry training. Highlights of the 2016 programming included an evening presentation about teaching neuroscience to psychiatry residents led by faculty from the National Neuroscience Curriculum Initiative (NNCI) and SOBP Education committee members,
and a "State of the Art" session featuring presentations by Drs. Matthew State, Sarah Lisanby,
Ned Kalin and Nathan Fox. PDS and MD students also enjoyed the opportunity to interact with Training Directors at breakfast and lunch discussion sessions.
Post-meeting survey feedback from ECI, PDS and Training Director Awardees indicates the educational initiatives of the 2016 meeting were successful overall. Additional information from the post-meeting surveys will once again be used by the Committee to ensure programming continues to meet the needs and interests of attendees for the 2017 Annual Meeting.

SOBP 2017 Membership Renewal - Renew by December 31, 2016

It is time to renew your SOBP membership for 2017. Membership must be renewed by December 31, 2016.
Membership renewal invoices for your 2017 membership were emailed to members in August. We will continue to send renewal invoices via email over the next few months. In addition, a hard-copy will be mailed in September and again in December. If you need a hard copy of your renewal invoice now, please let us know at sobp@sobp.org.
When you login to renew your membership, please take a moment to update your member profile - address, phone numbers, etc. In addition, t
he Society is in the process of updating member records with additional information such
as academic rank, scientific areas of interest, mentorship interests and career trajectory. This information will help Council and Committees plan for future programs and education initiatives in support of your membership with the Society.
After you log in to your member account:
- Scroll down and click "pay dues"
- On the next page, click "Renew and Update Information" and make any necessary changes on that page, then click "Next."
- On the next page, answer the additional questions.
- Proceed to the Payment step to renew your membership
