Demoing Plaster and Making Progress!
Over the last month, our staff has been working diligently on the pool replaster project. Staff has completed a number of projects necessary to prepare the pools for replastering, Among the tasks completed:

  • All three pools were drained
  • Interior lights inside the pools were removed and covered
  • Pool deck was cleared to provide space for the workers
  • AquaPlay was prepped for work
  • The dehumidification system was prepped, including - removal of the air bag and vent covers
  • A walk-through was completed with contractors, determining if any changes to the project were necessary
  • Contract was finalized with the construction company

Our hope is that when the doors open, our Lompoc Aquatic Center reopens at the end of March, our facility looks brand new. With a refurbished AquaPlay and slide tower, new plaster and a thorough scrub down, we are looking forward to unveiling this revamped Aquatic Center for our community. We are confident that our dedication to this facility will shine along with our improvements.

  Swimming and Your Health -
Why Swimming is One of the Best Exercises You Can Do

intense-swimmer.jpg
Some people think that pools are strictly for kids and hot summer days. But more and more, health care professionals - even therapists, are pushing their patients to get into the water. Swimming's health benefits are just too good to ignore. Want to lose weight? Swim. Want to lower your stress? Swim. Want to build up your core? Swim.

Here are just a few reasons why you should get in the water:
  • Swimming is one of the few exercises that uses nearly all your muscles in your body
  • Keeps your heart rate up without a lot of stress on your body
  • Build muscular and cardiovascular strength, as well as your endurance
  • Is a calming and relaxing form of exercise
  • Swimming has been found to help reduce anxiety and depression - check out this article from PsychCentral
  • Stress reducer
  • Improve: balance, posture, coordination and flexibility
  • Is a great low impact exercise for injuries
  • PLUS pools can be found just about anywhere

Even if your aren't a swimmer, just getting in the swimming pool and walking back and forth in the shallow end provides a great low impact, high resistance exercise. Whatever your swimming skill set, swimming can provide a benefit.

Of course, before starting an new exercise routine, you should check with your doctor or health care provider. But swimming just might be the ticket you need to feeling better.

Meet My Mentor
For this weeks Publication, I was supposed to highlight the Wulfestieg brothers, but being the busy kids they are, they didn't have a chance to get their information in on time, so I decided to highlight my mentor Pete DeQuincy.

I am sure none of you have heard his name before, Pete is the Aquatics Manager for East Bay Parks and Recreation District. Pete actually works in the Fire Department, he doesn't look like a lifeguard at all, but once he is in the water, his skills shine through.

Pete has been a lifeguard and a Red Cross instructor for over 25 years. He lives, breathes, eats, sleeps Red Cross. He is the go - to people for aquatics. I am one of very few, lucky enough to call him my mentor. He is my guide and instructor in this field and a huge inspiration to me.

Besides being a lifeguard, Pete creates standards for the Red Cross and is a constant contributor to their manuals. He also contributes regularly to many aquatic magazines and newsletters.

Did I mention the YouTube Channel? Check out Pete in action, he has his own YouTube channel.

Pete is an amazing lifeguard and an inspiration to anyone in the aquatics field.
