In  unsettling  times, QCH  ESOL  classes  cited  
for   "promoting   the  American  Dream"
At a time of great uncertainty for many of our immigrant neighbors, NY1 recently visited our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes to see how our students are persevering in the pursuit of the 'American Dream.' The students seek out our classes so that they can improve their work opportunities and be more involved in their children's education, but they also find comfort in meeting others who can relate to their experiences and concerns in this moment. Meanwhile, our
Immigrant Services Unit has been inundated by inquiries from neighbors who are frightened by the new tone in Washington.   "In one day alone I received more than one hundred phone calls," said QCH Immigration Specialist Carmen Gutierrez.  

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, QCH has received a $7,500 matching grant to support the increased demand on our paralegal services. Please consider donating to help us meet our match and expand our services; y our donation will go twice as far during this crucial time. 
Access for Young Women  has  "special sauce" 
Our  Access for Young Women (AFYW) program has been 
highlighted in a new large-scale, national impact study conducted by News Corp, Algorhythm, and Youth, Inc. called "The Art & Science of Creating Effective Youth Programs." The report examines four key drivers of success in promoting social-emotional learning among youth. AFYW is one of the programs shown to have the "secret sauce" needed to run effective youth programs, and director Tabitha Gamonski has been invited to present on the topic at a symposium for youth development practitioners this month. 

Chinese  New  Year  unites  Rego  Park  community 
Our  Rego Park Senior Center  celebrated the Lunar New Year with a special celebration that included singing, tai chi and ballroom dancing. Councilmember Karen Koslowitz and State  Senator Joseph Addabbo stopped by to take in the festivities and offer everyone their best wishes for the Year of the Rooster. 
QCH  stands  in  solidarity  with  Muslim  community
In response to the recent travel ban against people from seven Muslim-majority nations, QCH staff stood as allies with our Muslim neighbors during an interfaith gathering at JFK airport organized by the  New York Immigration Coalition.
"Queens is the world's borough, and we are stronger because of our diversity. We do not support any legislation that discriminates," said Executive Director Ben Thomases.
