"Chance favors the prepared mind." - Louis Pasteur
Strategic Planning Requires Planning
The most important meeting of the year was coming up. It would determine whether or not the new direction would be supported and take hold. It would finalize who was on board, who might remain skeptical or on the sidelines.
Madelyn, an experienced Executive Director, had done her homework. She had identified the current supporters and evaluated the other's concerns. She had met over several months with the Board Chair and a special task force represented by various agency constituents which served as a sounding board. This approach and the capable leadership of the Executive Director, Board Chair, and Task Force Leader had brought them far.
Their preparations included:
- Drawing out aspirations for serving their constituents in the best possible ways
- Reviewing trends and forces for change
- Evaluating current best practices in their field
- Gathering community aspirations, listening closely to their target market as well as their partners, colleagues, and others whose ideas could impart new insights
- Checking for organizational and constituent readiness for change
- Analyzing relevant data and studies
- Holding hefty staff discussions, working through their recommendations and anticipated questions
- Defining the overall goal
- Developing clear strategies toward the goal
While it may be common and very tempting to take a half day behind closed doors with only the board and key staff, even greater results are possible when you add others to the conversation. Strategic planning is a great time to "Turn Outward," hear from constituents and stakeholders and infuse the process with innovative thinking.
This month's download is a selection of highlights from the 4th Annual Symposium for Women in Nonprofit Leadership. All of the insights are valuable, but the quotes from Kitty Campbell, Leadership Lafayette, on "Maximizing Your Community" relate to turning outward and making deeper connections.
Planning for the future,
Lisa Hanger, Statewide Director, INRN
