A Message from the Dean...
Freedom from Fear
". . . you are God's field, God's building." - I Corinthians 3:9

Fear. We've all known it. Job called it, "the king of terrors" (Job 18:14).
Sophocles, in the fifth century B.C. said, "To him who is in fear, everything rustles."
Franklin Roosevelt said of fear, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
Here are a few examples of people who persevered in the face of failure:
When the great Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso, first applied for instruction, the teacher told him his voice sounded like the wind whistling through the window.
Henry Ford forgot to put a reverse gear in his first car.
Thomas Edison once told an interviewer that he had conducted over 10,000 experiments on the battery. His interviewer responded: "In view of this immense amount of thought and labor, my sympathy got the better of my judgment, and I said: 'Isn't it a shame that with the tremendous amount of work you have done you haven't been able to get any results?' Edison turned on me like a flash, and with a smile replied: 'Results! Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! I know  several thousand things that won't work!'"
Abraham Lincoln said "Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm." And he was a man who knew defeat. He was born into poverty. The only education he received he acquired himself. He failed in business, and he was defeated numerous times for public office. He lost the previous four races for Congress, Senate, Vice-President, and Senate before he was elected President.
With each setback, Lincoln continued to persevere and learn from his mistakes. Rather than being a failure at success, he experienced successful failures. The experiences didn't stop him; they taught him.
Where is your confidence?  If it is not in God and his call on your life, your fear can be the path to defeat. If your confidence is in God, defeat will simply be the school that forms your character.
