Council Highlights
Councillors
vote down
dual duty model
City Council is not going to ask the Regional Municipality of Niagara to change its Council composition.
After hearing from the public one last time during a special council meeting Monday, Feb. 6, City Council voted to keep its current model of governance. The proposed model would have reduced the number of elected officials representing St. Catharines to 12 by allowing six City ward councillors to act as 'dual duty' councillors by serving on Niagara Region council as well on City Council.
Shickluna hydro project no longer viable
City Council directed St. Catharines Hydro to cease work to build the Shickluna Generation Station on Twelve Mile Creek.
St. Catharines Hydro had been working on the project for close to 10 years. But, the St. Catharines Hydro board of directors no longer consider the project viable due to rising construction costs.
The City of St. Catharines is the sole shareholder of St. Catharines Hydro.
