Coding in French Math class - 6 th grade
La programmation en classe de mathématiques pour les 6ème

Pictured: Oliver and Laudine

New curricular programs in math are currently being implemented. Students will incorporate applications of technology through an introduction to coding. The goal is to learn to create computer programs, and to start learning data encryptions and/or the programming of robots.
The main components of the curriculum allow students to keep on track with our society's evolution in technology and to continue developing necessary 21 st  century skills.
The discovery of algorithms begins with basic instruction of sequences on Probot which code for patterns of movement.
6th graders enjoyed their first coding experience on February 1, 2017 with M. Giot!
Technology and Science in 4th grade

Pictured: Jacob, Jorge and Jonathan.

Fourth graders are learning about mineral identification in science. They were able to use a QR code reader app to look up crucial information in order to classify and learn more about a variety of mineral properties.
ALGOREA Coding Competition
Concours de Programmation ALGOREA

The ALGOREA Coding Competition is the next step to the "Concours Castor" competition 12 SDFAS students participated in recently. 7 students qualified to compete in the ALGOREA from March 6 to March 19, 2017, as follows:

- The Yellow selection is open to all students who scored under 100 points in January (45-minute competition, standard level).

- The Orange selection is open to all students who scored over 100 points in January 1-hour and 45 minutes competition, advanced level).

Congratulations to all our 12 students who participated, and good luck for the next round!
How do the planes fly?

Comment les avions volent-ils ?

One of our Kindergarten parents made a very interesting presentation on how the planes manage to take off and fly. All the kindergarteners had previously studied the air with their teachers, and they had a lot of questions to ask about the weight, length and the making of a plane.
The best parts were when they could touch a A 380 model, and watch a short video showing the comparison between a hair dryer with a plane reactor, or the flight of a goose with a plane.
Pacific Crest Trail Presentation

Pictured: Thomas Wheeler.

On Thursday February 2nd, 2017, 5th to 8th graders enjoyed a presentation in the auditorium from Environmental Studies Major College Graduate, Thomas Wheeler.
Tom spoke about his experience thru-hiking the full length of the Pacific Crest Trail. His message focused on the personal takes in took away from the experience: detachment from many emotions (fear, exhilaration, wonder), determination, resilience, and inner peace. He also pointed out the effects of climate change on the trail and what we can do to protect it.
Eldorado Project - Old Town State Park field trip 7thA and 3rdB

Pictured: Emma, Philippine...

As part of the international project Eldorado (AEFE)., 7thA and 3rdB students have taken part in a field trip to Old Town San Diego in order to reflect on the settlers' motivations to move to a new country.
During this excursion, they met with different inhabitants of the town in 1868 and discovered their daily lives, their challenges and joys.
They will use the information to write short stories where their characters will too leave their home
in hopes to find new opportunities.
