FOCUS ON FACULTY & STAFF | Cal State L.A., College of ECST
SPRING QUARTER | April 28, 2015

Dear Faculty and Staff-

This is our inaugural e-newsletter, focused on news and opportunities for faculty and staff. We hope to reduce the amount of email traffic by using this as our main  vehicle for communication. One section will focus on news you want to share with others, one section will focus on opportunities or requests for information or action, and one section, my favorite, will be a Moment of Joy - where we invite you to share a teaching moment, a research breakthrough, an insight gained, or your proudest moment with a student.

Please feel free to send anything you want included to Hasmik, and she will include if possible. Please send your content in a size and length appropriate for this newsletter so that she does not have to edit it down herself (in most cases 3 to 4 sentences is all there's room for); more detail can be provided in links; you can also send her an attachment and she will post it with a link.

This e-newsletter is one of our steps in improving communication and transparency in the College, as articulated in our strategic plan.

-Emily

Moments of Joy

A graduating student of ours, whom you may have heard speak at Honors Convocation, expressed to me that when he really understands a concept, he experiences a moment of joy. Ever since his father taught him algebra, he studies his subjects until they "click" and he gets that moment of joy. He tutors math now at the Midnight Mission - and now he experiences a moment of joy whenever one of his students "gets it". I expect that he will be a professor some day!
