Lent, like New Year's, is filled with hope and possibilities. But, like many New Year's resolutions, we often lose our resolve. The Laramie Project
by Moises Kaufman:
A Staged Reading
Sunday, Feb. 19th at 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall
In October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, tortured and left alone to die. His body - battered, bloody, barely clinging to life - was discovered eighteen hours later. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support. He died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay.
Connect 8's
Introducing CONNECT 8's - regularly scheduled dinner groups of 8 people that rotate each time so you meet more and more members of St. Martin's. Dinner groups will be hosted in the homes of participants and will be easy to organize. Dinners will be scheduled the first Sunday of the month from March through May.
Vigil Candles
Candles on the High Altar: Remembering Philly's Victims of Gun Violence

Why do we have votive candles lighted on the high altar every Sunday? Why a different number of candles every week? Some weeks there are 8 candles and other weeks 4 candles. These candles are lit in memory of the people in Philadelphia who were killed by gun violence that week. During January 2017, 28 people died in our city from gun violence. Multiply that sad and tragic number by grieving family members, traumatized neighbors and bystanders, hardworking first responders, ER doctors and nurses, etc., and we see the trauma inflicted on our city by preventable gun violence. When we light these candles, we pray for all the victims and we pray for the communal will to resolve the carnage.

Four easy ways you can help the Dahans find a new home!
Sameer, Majidah, Ayman and Iman are eager to move to an apartment in Northeast Philadelphia, closer to the heart of Philadelphia's Syrian community. There are several ways you can help:
  • Follow up by phone with realtors on our short list, 2-3 times a week. Apartments turn over fast!
  • Check Trulia and Zillow websites for apartments that meet our criteria.
  • Drive 20 minutes to the Northeast to check out available apartments.
  • Take the Dahans on a 20 minute-drive to to check out an available apartment. They are a lovely couple with two adorable children. You'll enjoy your time with them and they will be immensely grateful!

Help us meet our participation goal and make your 2017 pledge!
We consider our
participation goal  as equal in importance to our  financial goal .  We clearly asked every person who considers St. Martin's to be their church to make a pledge as an expectation of membership. 280 member households  responded affirmatively.  We need 20 more households to meet our participation goal of 300 pledging units.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
"Christopher Boone is 15. He knows 'all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,507.' He lives in Swindon with his father and Toby, his pet rat. He abhors all yellow and brown things, thinks he would make a good astronaut, and has never been further than the end of the road on his own until his discovery of the 'murder' of his neighbor's dog turns him into an amateur detective."
