Catholic Schools Week at Garces
Message from Lou Ann Durrett, Director of Campus Affairs

Next week is a special week for all of us at Garces. We get to celebrate all week what makes us special - our Catholic faith and Catholic values.  We are the only Catholic high school in our community and we are so blessed to be able to stand in the light of our faith at our school and during events on our campus. Next week is an opportunity to show our gratitude to all of those who make our mission possible - teachers and staff, parents, grandparents, local clergy, community supporters, parents, and most importantly, our students. With the help of the Garces Parent Club, Campus Ministry, and the ASB class, we have several activities planned and we hope to see many of you on our campus next week.

FILL THE BIN
Our faith calls us to be compassionate so next week will be dedicated to giving to the less fortunate. Garces parent Mark Holland has made a bin for the students to fill during Catholic School Week. We are asking students to bring new, or gently used, coats and sweatshirts to be donated to the Jamison Children's Center. We will encourage them to fill the bin to earn "Camp Ram" on Friday.

DAILY PRAYERS
There will be special prayers said each day at the start of school and at the end of the day to honor our teachers, grandparents, community supporters, parents, and our students.

MONDAY - ADORATION & CONFESSION, TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY, CSW MOVIE NIGHT
  • Fr. Bert from OLPH will be in the Chapel from 7:15 AM to 8:45 AM for Adoration. Confession will be heard upon request. When you drop your student off, take a minute to come to the chapel.  Adoration is a special experience and a wonderful part of our faith.
  • Teachers will enjoy lunch hosted by the Garces Parent Club, shout outs from the students, and special thank you notes.
  • Students are invited to come and see a pro-life movie, Bella, at 6 PM in MLH. There will be free popcorn.

TUESDAY - GRANDPARENT APPRECIATION
Grandparents are invited to join us for Mass and then stay for lunch. There is no charge for lunch. The Garces Parent Club will provide a dessert table.  There will be a photo station set up and each grandparent will receive a copy of the photo in the mail with a note from their grandchild.

WEDNESDAY - COMMUNITY APPRECIATION DAY AND STUDENT SIGNING DAY
  • During lunch, we will celebrate the signing of several students who are receiving scholarships to play in college.
  • Parent Club will be delivering baskets of goodies to the local parishes. There will be some social media thank you's along with some more personal thank you's to those in the community who support our school.
THURSDAY - PARENT APPRECIATION DAY
Parents are invited to join us on campus and can bring a picnic lunch to share with their student. Students will write special intentions for their parents on our cross and we will say a special prayer for our parents at the end of lunch. Parents will receive special notes of thanks from their student in the mail.

FRIDAY - STUDENT APPRECIATION DAY
Courtesy of Garces parents Mike and Keala Strahan, students will get to enjoy Camp Ram at lunch. There will be several fun and exciting games that will pit the classes against each other. Each class will have a class color to wear for the day and class pride will be on the line! The winning class will receive a trophy.
Bakersfield Prayer Breakfast

Garces Memorial was well represented at the Bakersfield Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, January 26th!  Thank you to Grace Geissel, Molly Soper, Priscilla Miranda, Leilah Green, Molly Waguespack, Michael Barnett, and Molly Ming for attending.
Fr. Nathan Cromly

On Wednesday, January 25th, Fr. Nathan Cromly came and spoke to our students, faculty, and parents.  He is an amazing man of God and the students really responded to his message.  He talked to them about why they should "stay Catholic" - for themselves and for others. He shared his story and how he was called to the priesthood at the first Youth Conference held by Pope John Paul II. He told them to stand up in their faith, to make a difference, and that they are here for greatness. He told them that if they choose faith, they will never be bored.  He also went and spoke with students in some of the Theology classes and led our faculty through a spiritual activity. Wednesday evening, he spoke with a group of our parents about keeping Christ in the lives of their children.  He shared that not only is it important that parents model behavior, they need to give their child "roots" and "wings" in their Catholic faith. He asked parents to share their roots with their children.  One idea was that if you have a family bible that has been passed on to you, do the same for your child.  Buy a bible for your senior child, write some family memories in it along with some inspirational messages and give it to your child when they either start or finish their senior year. Another idea was to purchase a family chalice and every year have a family Mass that your family attends with the celebrant using your family chalice during Mass.  And use that chalice at family weddings and baptisms.  He also suggested that if you are a hunter who likes the solitude of communing with God while out in nature, share that with your child as well. Find a special spot you can revisit each year. He explained that by giving children strong roots, when you give them wings, the roots will keep them tied to their faith.

Assistant Principal of Student Affairs

Dear Parents  -

I certainly hope this finds you and your family well. Pressing deeper into the new year is often a time period that strives to normalize the busyness of the holidays yet runs smack dab into the start of more things. You certainly can see this at Garces currently as the winter sports are in full stride and our spring sports are swinging into action, outside groups begin to rent MLH, the swimming pool and other athletic venues on our
campus, student activities increase with rallies and dances, new things like club lacrosse and theater auditions and of course the list goes on. I know firsthand what it is to feel like your sinking instead with all the busyness instead of being on topside.

Recently I was reminded in Scripture  about the danger of watching the waves when I read the passage where the disciples were in a boat and Jesus came to them walking on the water. The Bible explains that the Peter ends up jumping out of the boat and walking on the water to Jesus. Then it happens, Peter "saw the wind boisterous" and began to sink. This passage in Matthew 14 was such a strong reminder of how easy it is for us to take our eyes off of Jesus and look at the busyness around us and how the result is often an overwhelming sinking. I quickly joined Peter and cried out "Lord, save me".

God Bless!

Message from
Tonya Abbott
Director of Community Affairs

Hello Garces Family!  As the Director of Community Affairs, I have the honor and privilege to partner with great parent volunteers committed to ensuring Garces is here for their families, and for future families.  I cannot emphasize enough how important your support is to the success of our students and school.  As a community we can and will continue to do great things for Garces Memorial.  It is not the efforts of one person, it is not a single contribution from one donor, it is a collective effort as a community.

Garces was Founded on Faith.  The faith of our school's founders, that generations of young people would have the benefit of a Garces education.  The faith of those that followed, that our benefactors would continue to truly understand the importance of supporting Catholic education.  The faith that as a community, we will always work together for the betterment of our students, their families and our school.
In development there is a common mantra... Every gift makes a difference.  This rings true for Garces.  Your gifts of time, talent and resources make a difference.

Our most pressing need...your support of two critical activities.

First, our annual appeal The Garces Fund.  How wonderful it would be to share with our community that 100 percent of our current families have supported this appeal.  Remember, "every gift makes a difference".  For some, that may be $25, for others much more.

Second, our annual Garces Gala is fast approaching.  My special thanks to returning Gala Co-Chairs, Raji Sanghera and Maria Toretta.  Maria and Raji are perfect examples of that "collective effort" referenced above.  Raji and Maria have put together a great committee who are donating their personal talents, time and resources to ensure Gala is successful.  Please take moment to read up on the student contest that will start next week and run through Feb. 10th.

In addition to Gala, we will begin next week planning our annual golf tournament scheduled for May 11th and 12th at Bakersfield Country Club.  This year's Msgr. Leddy Golf Classic chair is parent John Hatten.  John welcomes anyone interested in helping in the planning of our tournament.  Like all of our other events, and our annual fund drive, proceeds from the tournament benefit all of our students.

Funds raised throughout the school year make up the difference in the actual cost of a Garces education vs. what you pay in tuition.

Remember every Garces family receives at least an annual $2,000 subsidy.
