First Grade Connections
January 26th, 2017

|
Dear First Grade Families,
We are not slowing down for a moment! Our Neighborhood Study is keeping us incredibly busy. Even though we didn't make it to the water treatment plant last week, we were able to learn about the process in class and completed an amazing follow up activity in the iLab and our classrooms. This week we walked down Main Street, Half Moon Bay to research the things we will need for our neighborhood build, the week of February 13th.
Thanks so much for sending in raw cardboard shoeboxes (not shiny because the paint doesn't stick). Please keep them coming, along with all the other wonderful recycled items that you think might be useful to us. Additionally, thank you for supporting us with our Community Faces project, by encouraging your children to complete them each week and sending them back on time. You will be delighted to see them presented all together at our Academic Celebration on February 17th.
Sincerely,
Your First Grade Team
Stephanie Hanepen, Lesley Stevens and Vienna Klingele

What We Have Been Learning
|
|
Reading
The students are making a lot of independent choices during Readers Workshop. Each day the students spend time with a teacher in a guided reading group and then have the opportunity to choose from a number of different activities: 1) iPads to play word games or read leveled books in RAZ kids, 2) word work, and 3) Read to Self.
|
Social Studies
Even though our trip to the water treatment plant was rained out, we learned how our neighborhood treats and delivers clean water to our homes, businesses and schools. We worked with partners from the other class to create an artistic reflection of the water treatment process.
|
|
Math
Students played the Attribute Train Game. Since they have been learning about plane and solid shapes AND properties, this game was the perfect mix! For each turn, only one attribute could be changed; size, shape, color or thickness. The students had a lot of fun!
|
Science
The students have been exploring the properties of glass, metal, wood, plastic, fabric and paper. They each brought items from home made from these materials and we sorted them as a group, to create a materials museum.

New This Week
Below is the image for the Raz-Kids App which was introduced this week in Readers Workshop. It allows children to read many different books at their level and answer comprehension questions too! They are excited about "Reading on the iPad like adults do". We will send you more information about this wonderful app soon, so that your child can use it at home for their reading homework if they would like.

|
Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- Looking at solid shapes: Does it roll? Does is stack? Does it slide?
- What decoding strategies can you use to figure out challenging words?
- What is a digraph? Give me an example? Let's brainstorm some words!
- What is the difference between wants and needs? What are goods and services?
