Creative Loafing: In St. Pete, the Women's March was the most big league and bigly event ever 
 
Exactly 24 hours after Donald Trump officially became (ugh) president, a crowd was gathering at Demens Landing, a large waterfront park in downtown St. Pete. Their aim was to show solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of people who marched in Washington, DC and elsewhere on Saturday.

It was the biggest event of its kind in the city's history, officials said. At least 20,000 people showed up.

They came. Babies in strollers.The elderly in wheelchairs. And all ages in between.

They came. All races. All genders. Different religions.The physically fit and those on crutches.

They came. More than 20,000 of them came to Demen's Landing, they said, to stand firmly together for civil rights, the environment and other issues that span all ages, races and genders.

Tampa Bay Times: $10 million land deal in downtown St. Petersburg sets stage for major redevelopment 
 
The redevelopment of a prime block in downtown St. Petersburg has taken a major step forward.

Ending a long-running dispute, First States Investors has transferred its part of the 400 block of Central Avenue to members of the Pheil family in a $10 million transaction, newly recorded deeds show. Family members, who own the rest of the block, can now proceed with the sale of the entire two-acre site to New York's Red Apple Group for what could be one of the priciest transactions ever for a downtown parcel.

Following emergency seawall repair and replacement, city of St. Petersburg Water Resources workers will begin work Wednesday ( Jan. 25), to replace both potable and reclaimed piping in Venetian Isles along Grand Canal Boulevard between Overlook Drive NE and Massachusetts Avenue NE.

TBN Weekly: Lynn Pippenger Hall opens at USF St. Pete  
 
Hundreds of community members, legislators and university students, faculty and staff gathered outside the east entrance of Lynn Pippenger Hall on Jan. 17 to celebrate the official opening of the newest building to grace the USF St. Petersburg campus.

Lynn Pippenger Hall is the new home of the Kate Tiedemann College of Business.

Tampa Bay Times: Kriseman to host St. Pete's 1st mayoral Iftar dinner 
 
On a day marked by news of  President Donald Trump's intention to at least temporarily limit immigration to the United States from some predominantly Muslim countries, Mayor Rick Kriseman announced Wednesday he will host a June dinner with Tampa Bay Islamic leaders.

One of those leaders, Abdul Karim Ali, is a well-known iman who is also the son of Joseph Savage, who organized the landmark 1968 sanitation strike in the city, a major civil rights advance for black city workers.

The city's first offiical Iftar dinner to celebrate Ramadan will be held at the Coliseum and is open to all faiths, according to a news release from the mayor's office.

Tampa Bay Reporter: Kriseman, Muslim Leaders To Host City's First Iftar Dinner  
 
Mayor Rick Kriseman and Muslim leaders from throughout Tampa Bay will host St. Petersburg's first Iftar dinner welcoming residents of all faiths to celebrate the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The event will be held June 14 at St. Petersburg's historic Coliseum. Additional details will be announced later.

TAO Connect plans to expand its online mental health tools, now that it has nearly $1.5 million from two angel funds.

FAN Fund invested $900,000 and New World Angels invested $460,000, according to press releases from each organization.

Tampa Bay Times: Smokeless tobacco banned at Tropicana Field, other city venues   
 
The City Council formally approved a ban on smokeless tobacco at Tropicana Field and city parks and recreation centers at its Jan. 19 meeting.

The ban, supported by the Tampa Bay Rays and Major League Baseball, would make St. Petersburg the 13th MLB city to ban smokeless tobacco, not just for players and coaches, but for anyone who attends an organized athletic event in the city.

Tampa Bay Times: Kriseman meets with MLB, MLS in New York City    
 
Mayor Rick Kriseman traveled to New York City Thursday to make his city's case to keep one major league franchise and bring another to the Sunshine City.

Kriseman met with Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber first for about an hour at the commissioner's office.

They discussed the Tampa Bay Rowdies' bid to join MLS. Garber, the mayor said, was impressed with the region's television market and population base. Kriseman emphasized St. Petersburg's demographics---a city getting younger and more diverse---as a a good fit for MLS, whose fan base skews the same way.

Afterward, Kriseman visited Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred at MLB headquarters to discuss the Tampa Bay Rays ongoing stadium search.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: Here's what Kriseman focused on during New York pitch to MLB commissioner    
 
St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman is positioning his city to come out on top in the fight for the future of Tampa Bay Rays baseball in Tampa Bay - or so he hopes.

Kriseman met with Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred Thursday in New York City to pitch a baseball site he thinks can be a prime spot for the team's and the region's economic success.

"To me it was important to try and get him to understand what the future potentially holds for that site," Kriseman said.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: From racing to retail: Boutique in St. Pete's Edge District is Susie Wheldon's next chapter     
 
Susie Wheldon deliberately planned the grand opening of her new boutique in St. Petersburg for the same weekend that the Firestone Grand Prix takes over the Sunshine City.

It's a nod to her late husband, IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon, who died in a racing accident in Las Vegas in 2011. But the opening of Verve, on Central Avenue in the city's Edge District, is symbolic on multiple levels for Wheldon.
